Okay, some of you might be a little put off about this, but the thread i posted a few weeks ago (.338 Win Mag or .30-.378 Wby Mag?), was rather poorly planned on my part. It seem that i have been overlooking what may be one of the finest choices out there at the time. I picked her up for my whitetail/black bear brush gun, but with some HOT-HOT loads, my 1895G in .45-70 could be it. I think i got stuck in the thought process of a stainless & synthetic high power bolt action. However one of my main motivations was the thought of me getting a new firearm, but i think i've got a handle on that one too. Now i need to convince mamma that we need to set aside money for me to pick up a Freedom Arms .454 Cassul (or possibly a BFR from Mag. Research in .45-70). Plus with the money i'll save i may be able to pick up one of those slick little Remington Tactical numbers that i've seen posted on GB.The main reason that i posted this though was to thank everyone out there for the overwhelming support that i got on the subject. Thanks guys, i realize again why i love this site so much

I've been admiring that one in the catalog myself, but it's a bit overpowered for my needs. I like the 1895GS just for looks; I understand they're hard to find.

That brings up another question that i've been tossing around in my head. I know that a synthetic stocked rifle is preffered for the harsh climates of AK, however other than the Alaskan Brush Gun (G&A did a piece on the rifles, they're based off the 1895G).I know of no company that makes synthetic stocks for the Guide Gun, and honestly i'm not sure that i'd want to put them on her, that picture brings a shudder to my mind. The only way that i'd consider that is if i got ger a stainless finish, and forgive my ignorance, but i don't know if that is even a realistic possibility financially or otherwise. Is there anything that can be done to a wood stocked rifle to prevent the swelling and warping that comes from such a climate?

ist..war: if you keep a good finish on your weapon inside the barrel groove and under the but plate and keep a coat of wax on it [furniser polish] you should have no probablem. as long as your stock is not loaded with moisture when you go you should not have a probalem for a short trip anyway. carl
