Bridge, 16 ga. length for bullets?

This gun is about 60 yrs. old. I cleaned it, and looking down the bore into sunlight, it's shiny smooth from both mussle and breach.
Can only see about 5 little pin point pocks in the barrel. Also, I measured from the chamber where you can see a groove circular inthe
barrel, from the part whereit breaks open to the groove. It's 2 3/4 in. Is this how I know what length shell to buy?

Thanks for the help.

I am serious guys, I'm new at this remember? Did I measure it right?

    I mispelled muzzle....
Seriously, a gunsmith wants 20 bucks to tell me, you'll save me some
    money. Thanks.

Yes, but I'd let the smith check it out anyway. The $20 would be good insurance to make sure the gun is shootable.

2 3/4 is the measure of a fired shotgun shell with the crimping open. That is how the length is determined, though the 2 3/4 inch shell actually measures about 2 3/8 before fireing. It would be unusual for your shotgun to shoot something longer as the 3 and 3.5 mag shells are no more than 20 or so years old. The only other things your shot gun could shoot would be 2 or 2.5 inch shells if it was European. So, you should be good to go with 2.75 shells, but DO NOT shoot steel shot in this old timer as the pressures will be too high. Bismuth is fine. Good Shootin'!

During or around that time some 16ga shotguns were chambered for the 2 9/16" shell. Be careful!
