Notice how he didn't bother to show us how it splits wood with knots.

    Pretty neat tool !

What's even equally innovative his use of a tire as an elastic retainer.
Every time, I ever split wood... The resultant two pieces went flying to either side.

    Smart guy... [;)]

I did notice that was pretty straight grained chunks...
Maybe he purposely cut them through potential knots to limit the issues.

Wood, when frozen and cut within the last couple of days split like this with an ordinary maul and with little effort. I worked a winter up in western Pa cutting mine props from mostly oak. Cut the log 24" and split it into 3" X 3"X 3" pieces for the props. We would spend one day cutting, then let the 24" pieces sit over night and freeze then they would explode in half with hardly no effort just the maul falling on the piece of oak.

I do believe I see snow on the ground so I am guessing it is cold enough to freeze a piece of a log over night.

Now if the piece is Black Locus you can forget splitting it at all.

Very interesting. Finn boy has invented a new maul. I would like to try it out but it is too expensive for me.

Finns are very high-tech. They invented the Finnish Fireplace, the best wood stove in the world. They invented the M39 Mosin Nagant.
Also they make the best studded snow tires in the world, the Nokian Hakkepelliitta.

I have a M39 and I have Nokian Hakkepellittas on my truck.

Here is the Bad Boy that I split firewood with:

The classic Sotz Monster Maul. This is a wonderful tool. I have been using one of these since 1978.
I would like to try the high tech Finn maul vs my Monster Maul.

Had to cut a couple trees that fell across a food plot at the hunt camp this year. Might as well split since we heat with a fireplace.

The maul handle is 36" long, and that is two logs split on the back of my truck.

By God, carbine that is a beautiful thing! A Stihl, a maul, and a pickup load of oak.

I like the idea of that fancy ax but the stuff he is splitting I can do with a hatchet. He is making kindling not splitting firewood in the video.

Show it performing with some knotty stringy firewood and I will be impressed.

I split all my wood by hand for exercise. I have a monster maul and 2 other regular mauls. As well as three splitting wedges. The stuff I am splitting will take a couple wedges driven in full depth and the monster maul pounding away to get one split.

I still have mine. Hate to say how much red and white oak I have split with it. Then I bought one of these.. It attaches to the drivers side rear axle on my jeep. I gave it away to a friend who has a wood stove. I kept the monster maul.

Still lot of work, I wish I had a real fireplace in my house. Lot of Finns still heat their house with wood.

If you lunged over, and the stickler got stuck in your shin, you would be in for a bad day.

The stickler works pretty well. One problem I have with it is the noise.

I do enjoy splitting firewood with my Monster Maul. I like to cut it, split it, and I love to burn it.

It looks pretty interesting. Wish I could try it before the investment.

Usually if I don't make progress with a few whacks of a double bladed axe, I use the slower hydraulic splitter. We burn a lot and I like the exercise too.

An axe is no good for splitting wood. It is too sharp, and it will get stuck. Also it is not heavy enough.

The Monster Maul has a 12-pound head and is at a blunt angle. It either bounces off, or it splits the wood right in two. Usually splits, and blows the 2 chunks 10 feet to the side.

My outside boiler will eat those pieces just the way they are. Not much splitting here.

I had one of those. They are indestructible, but very heavy. Most of the wood I tried to bust, it just bounced off as the wedge is to wide.
