Hunter blasts store's Christmas reindeer to death A reindeer escaped from a Christmas display only to be shot and killed by a hunter. The hunter mistook it for a local deer and shot him in Franklin Park, Pennsylvania.Donner had escaped from a garden centre along with his sidekick Blitzen.Donner was quickly recaptured, but Blitzen took off for nearby forests.Garden centre employee Jennifer Smith told television station WTAE TV: "We're all very upset and distraught. We feel like we've lost a member of our family here."We hope this will make people more cautious of what they're doing during hunting season. Don't get buck fever and shoot at anything that moves."The reindeer's owner has not decided what action to take and police and the local wildlife commission have both said they are not responsible, as reindeer are not covered in the local hunting regulations. http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_470978.html?menu=news.latestheadlines

Looks like Petas post on this subject has been eliminated. It's interesting that the whole story wasn't printed in her post.Note the last paragraph on this post. This case is closed....

He mistook a reindeer (caribou i take it?), for a deer? How? It doesn't make sense. It seems every now and then you hear stories like this, but they just don't make sense. I can't imagine.........ghotie wanders off into the darkness to ponder the moment.

If one keeps a wild animal, one must live w/ the consequences if it escapes. Good deal for the hunter - if it's not regulated, he can use his tag on some routine venison. Bet that grain-fed reindeer meat is pretty damn tasty . . . lucky bastid. Hope he sends the entrails to PETA.

Now this topic raises an interesting question that probably doesnt have to be answered-but Ill ask anyway.I live in Pennsylvania. Lets just say, a Moose straggles over here. You might think this is impossible, but a few years ago, a Moose was confirmed to be seen at the Deleware water gap, on the NJ side. Which means, if the Moose walked another 100 yards, it would have been in Pennsylvania. There is no "moose" season in Pennsylvania, and I cant find anything that states it is illegal to shoot a Moose. Can I shoot a moose, if I saw one in the state of Pennsylvania?

Salzo, if its not prohibited, I would think that it would be fine. However, don't take legal advice from me.

It's easy to see why it's reasonable to ask the law makers to make more laws which might prevent these sorts of imbecil acts to occur.Should the government legislate common sense, as a prerequisite for owning or using a firearm (they require it in many sates). If a person can't excersize common sense, in applying anything that is taught as basic firearms safety precautions, what benefit is it to require such training.Applying common sense dictates, that any person can say "I don't know", TODAY; but there is no reason why TOMORROW, they need to remain ignorant about any subject. Which really brings up the real issue, it's not a matter of I can't, "but I won't; apply common sense, 'cause I want to do it my way" seems to be the response, the same reason why some people drive, without regard to other motorists safety. And finally, it really wasn't my fault, seems to be everybodies defense, these days.
