Do These Need Reflection?

Senior citizens are constantly being criticized for every conceivable deficiency of the modern world, real or imaginary. We know we take responsibility for all we have done and do not blame others. BUT, upon reflection, we would like to point out that it was NOT the senior citizens who took: > > The melody out of music, > > The pride out of appearance, > > The romance out of love, > > The commitment out of marriage, > > The responsibility out of parenthood, > > The togetherness out of the family, > > The learning out of education, > > The service out of patriotism, > > The religion out of school, > > The Golden Rule from rulers, > > The nativity scene out of cities, > > The civility out of behavior, > > The refinement out of language, > > The dedication out of employment, > > The prudence out of spending, or > > The ambition out of achievement. > > And we certainly are NOT the ones who eliminated patience and tolerance from personal relationships and interactions with others!! > > Does anyone under the age of 50 know the lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner? Just look at those old folks with tears in their eyes and pride in their hearts as they stand at attention with their hand over their hearts! > > And, unless many of our younger generation learn to count, in the absence of computers and calculators, they will be back to counting on fingers and toes. > > Remember.......Inside every older person is a younger person wondering what the hell happened.

As a "senior" myself, I observe that the Old Days were not nearly as good as we remember them. I feel privledged to have lived in an era where kerosene lit farms, when water came from the hand pump on the well outside, when the house was heated by a wood stove, not by choice, but because that is all there was, and when the toilet was at the end of a path. I do not want to go back to that however. As far as I can tell old farts have been complaining since the beginning of time that these kids today are on the road to ruin, and no where near as well mannered, well schooled, well groomed nor hard working as we were.Give it a break. Oh, I dunno. I kind of agree (and some here would call me young at 37, others would call me an old fart). Of course, living in SoKal, I regularly have to listen to "feces" music blasting out of cars blocks away, kids casually chatting using the foulest possible language, and incredible rudeness that makes my blood pressure spike.

Sure, but that is what kids are supposed to do. Every generation has to be more outrageous than the one before to be cool (um, or what ever they call it now days). I had friends in college with shoulder length hair that bemoaned their childrens purple and green hair. What did they expect. The point is, they will mostly grow up to be responsible citizens, just like we mostly did.

The ones you speak of are the offspring of some of these Seniors referenced hear. Were these offspring raised in dysfunctional families, or are they products of broken families, or higher education. It's impossible for our Children to grow up holding to these enurated traditional values, unless we lead them by the hand and teach these to them, and live our lives by example.Say, 250, howfar south are You."Raise your children in the way that they should go, when they become old they not depart from it."[This message has been edited by turbo (edited 12-21-2001).][This message has been edited by turbo (edited 12-21-2001).]

He Dog, that's true enuff. May just be because I have to put up with it all the time. Used to work at a place where the kids would go out at lunch and blast out (c)rap and had no idea they were pi$$ing people off until my buddy and I almost spat on them and let them know that not everyone loves that garbage. Excess stress I don't need, resisting the urge to stick the muzzle of a Garand into their car and loose a few shots that "happen" to ruin their stereo. Hey, they like loud thumping noises, don't they? 'Course The Beetles, Janice Joplin, and The Rolling Stones never sang(?) about the joys of killing cops...Turbo, I am as far south as you can get and not hit Vincente Fox in the eye if you spit southward, San Diego, "America's Finest (and damn near most expensive) City". Even if the Chargers do blow.

Time for a sanity check . . . I find myself agreeing w/ JD . . . WOW, now that feels strange!!Sometime prior to 1993 (which is when I saw it), American Psycholgy Assoc or some such outfit did an in-depth analytical study of violence in society (which I would submit stands as symptomatic of many of the ills listed in the original post). After examining broken homes, guns and roughly twenty factors as I remember it, the only factor that they could correlate statistically was TV. Immediate gratification, simplistic answers, violence, sex, and the whole gamut of negative behaviors (well, short of XXX videos).
