I just got back from seeing "The Road to Perdition" and turned on TBS to realize that the SUPERSTATION is running a marathon dedicated to The Duke. Is anyone else indulging in The Duke while they fart around here on GB?

The Road to Perdition has been interpreted by some as an "anti-gun" movie which wasn't really visible until the last scene when Tom Hanks displays a certain degree of relief when his son refuses to shoot someone who is about to kill him. He is actually relieved that his sone won't defend himself. I walked away from the movie thinking it was GREAT. I think that the feelings expressed by some spring from a certain degree of cynicism and paranoia over the whole anti-gun attitude of Hollywood. I viewed the last scene in a different light. I saw Tom Hanks' character as an individual who was so screwed up by his way of life that he did not understand the appropriate time and place to take the life of another. He lost the appreciation for the value of life and swung to the extreme view that ALL life is sacred--even that of a killer who is about to kill you. He himself shot that man so that his son would not have to. The scene could be interpreted many different ways and I chose to set aside those creeping doubts so that I could walk away with some satisfaction. I don't know what Tom Hanks thinks about guns but his reaction to his son's refusal to shoot the crazed killer was fitting to the role that he played. I see another Oscar winner here for Tom Hanks.

Idsman, I read the Hanks character as a man relieved his son was not going to follow him into the mob as a hired enforcer/killer. Maybe it comes to the same thing, but It seemed to me at the end, Hanks got his values straight. I agree it was a good story, though not one I would likely see again.

Don't ya have all the Duke's movies on DVD?

Just been surfing around with Rio Lobo on the tube right know. John Wayne movies are some of the greatest. I always enjoyed the westerns the most of all. What was the name of the movie where he trained a bunch of kids to drive cattle because he couldn't hire any men? Wouldn't mind getting a copy of that one.
