I just got back to Illinois after spending a week with my younger brother(48) up in a firetower 20 miles from Grand Canyon. You westerners know how desperately dry it is out there. Pray or hope for rain guys.
I saw alot of elk but I have to hand it to you guys who hunt out there, do you pass up alot of shots that are in remote areas? It's pretty rare in Illinois to be farther than 400 yards from a road, not to mention that it's pretty flat. I'm going to hunt elk and deer around Dove Creek, Colorado when I retire in 4 years, any of you familiar with the area? Anyway it was nice to sit up in the tower and catch up with my bro while we looked for smoke.

When you start hunting around Dove Creek, just remember, don't shoot anything farther from the road than you are willing to haul it. A few men I know have had a heart attack just walking around in the thin air up here. 400 yards from a road sounds great, here you can get miles and miles of real rugged mountains from any road, and have to spend an entire day (and sometimes the next) just getting an animal out, once you have it down. Been there done that. It ain't no fun. Unless you have horses that can pack them out.

If I knew then, what I know now.
