"the XM8 Future Combat Rifle is intended to replace existing M4 Carbines and select 5.56mm x45 weapons in the US Army arsenal beginning as early as the fourth quarter of FY05. Once adopted, the M8 Carbine will replace the aging M16/M4 family of weapons, which have been in service for nearly four decades, longer than any previous US service rifle."

Post this again if and when "intended to" changes to "will", and "once" changes to "has been". Else, this is just another XM29 flavor vying for attention.

I looked at the specs, and was most impressed with the ease of cleaning and quickness of parts changing. 20,000 rounds between cleanings does look impressive.

But remember the original M-16 was supposed to NEVER need cleaning.

No matter how much it's tested, problems are sure to come up once it's in the field. I just hope those 'problems' don't get some of our soldiers killed before they're fixed, as in the original M-16.

    Would I keep my Colt AR-15 A2?.....yes.

    Would I buy one?..............HE## YES.

Hmmmm...since it's going to be manufactored in Columbus, GA., about 3 hours away...wonder when I can drive down there and pick one up?

Note that it will be manufactured in the U. S., thus it avoids the '89 ban...

The Army has given ATK (Alliant Techsystems) a contract for $113 Million for development and manufacturer of the rifle. H&K is the programs sole rifle manufacturer, ATK is sub-contracting the rifle components.

The scary part is the Army is trading long range capability for the 20mm thermobaric round that is supposed to pierce kevlar, produce an explosion so horrific it will suck the oxygen from a room killing everyone.

I've always welcomed advances in technology...but this may have gone over the top for me.

1- Doesn't appear to have an "open sight"....in case the batteries or the scope fail.

2- Trend now seems to be the addition of a tactical light...is that incorporated in the stock?

3- where are the sling swivels?

4- Where will all the accessories go? Like a Grenade launcher? or is that no longer necessary with the exploding rounds sucking out the oxygen?

Not unlike Jeff Cooper's flatulence, which wiped out sixty-three diners at a Phoenix Applebee's two years ago.

Bayonets? Why would a police force need bayonets? They are not in our foreign policy's interest and would bring down the moral of pro-american muslims....

This should be a good debate.

From what I've read, the XM-8 is just a way for the U.S. military to use the H&K G36 without admitting that they're using a G36. The internals are the same, the integral sight is the same, and, of course, the caliber's the same.

They added a gooney-looking stock, made the carrying handle integral instead of modular, and called it the "XM-8" as opposed to "G36."

I'm surprised some Capitol Hill lunkhead hasn't advocated seizing all of HK-USA's assets and renaming the XM-8 the "Freedom Rifle."

That $113 million R&D contract to Alliant TechSystems now seems somewhat...superfluous.
