Packing the Car

Member Posts: 7,975
Well, for the past two days, Mrs njretcop and I have been packing the car for the trip to Harrisburg on Friday the 13th. We are trying not to forget anything, but it always happens anyway.
We are bringing plenty of clothes and stuff, but the most important thing is to be prepared for any road emergency my father always taught me.
I am very worried because of the cold and snowy winter we are having. I have packed the trunk with:
snow shovels
chains
salt
anti-freeze
tools
snake bike kit
map of Oklahoma (only map I could find in the garage)
tent
bottled water
old heater hose
mosquito netting
sun tan oil
duct tape
two tire tubes (one without any patches)
flares
flashlight (gotta get batteries)
blankets
K rations
sand
candles
lighter (gotta get fluid)
55 gal oil drum (full)
extra gas can (not full)
four way lug wrench
gloves
rags
I know I'm forgetting things we may need. If ya'll can think of anything, please add it on.
We have gotten road directions from AAA. Seems pretty easy, but Mrs njretcop is the navigator (and backseat driver) so ya never know. We are going to keep a log. Do people do that anymore? When we were small and went on a trip, my mother always wrote down everything in a book, like things that we had seen, how many miles we drove a day, how much gas mileage we got, how much we spent each day and how many cars with the same state license plates that we had, that we passed on the road.
Really looking forward to this trip. Hope all the others from GB, who are going, have a safe trip as well. Will keep you guys posted......
Gotta go now and look for the floor jack, you just don't wanna go anywhere without that!

Yup, I saw Mrs njretcop pack her Brownie box camera. We don't have a cell phone, but I am taking my old WWII field phone and 200 miles of wire.
Alan,
Living in the wilderness as you do, you should know better than suggest I leave the snake bite kit at home. Imagine!
Does anybody know if they have any paved roads in Penna yet? What about Indians, or highway men? I'd take a firearm, but I don't think they allow those in Penna.

Then I guess you better come here! [8D]
About the only thing we have packed is the Yankee to American Translator (voice operated) so that we can communicate with our Northern Cousins. Swwbo and I are really looking forward to this little outing but I feel sure any pre-packing will be done either on Wed night or Thursday morning as we leave. Sheesh...she hasn't even told me which vehicle we will be driving. I gotta feeling it will be my lil p/u. Last July when we went to Nashville I heard complaints that she ran out of room to put anything else in her Infinity.

No Cialus, it's Viagra for me. My stock broker told me he's been big on it for a long time. The company, he said, is run by stand up guys, who know the business isn't easy! In fact, who would know better than them how hard it can get. Buying their stock, he explained, will increase my portfolio and stiffen my position in the market. (My portfolio really needs to be increased from time to time and who wouldn't want a stiff position?)
Don't go worrying about breakfast, Mrs njretcop figures on catching us a chicken along the road. That woman is fast I tell ya!!!

Keep up the good work guys!
There have been a lot of good ideas suggested here. I knew I was right to ask such smart and experienced travellers for help.

I also didn't see a first aid kit.
Love them Pre-64's!!!!-Bob
The dictionary is another good idea.........but forget the first-aid kit. At my age, it wouldn't do any good. I'm probably up to third-aid by now, hahaha.
Keep em coming......at this rate, I may have to make room in the car by leaving Granny Mrs njretcop home. DRAT!, can't do that either, who's gonna push if'n we get stuck?

Besides reading all those license plates we always enjoyed those catchy Burma Shave signs on long journeys.

Don't forget the water bag hanging on the bumper.
And the tire pump. And the hot patches.
And watch for them new "Cabin Courts."

You're absolutely right! Those are fond memories! Ya gotta be close to my age to remember that stuff, haha. If you saw a car with the same state plates, you would wave like you was old friends, it was fun! I miss those days. [:(]

You need the pillows to sit one. so the springs don't go poking holes is Mrs. njretcop's behind. Remember the last trip?
The gene pool needs chlorine.
I'm afraid the Hudson can't make it. It's in the hospital having surgery. Seems the ole girl isn't what she used to be, neither is the Hudson, LOL.
We'll be tooling along RT 78 in our Spanish Cadillac (Chevy Impala). Just look for a black car loaded down with it's tail dragging. We'll be in it!
