Another thread prompted me to ask this: Are they any good? Can you change the barrels yourself? Is Marlin just playing CYA?

I had a couple handi rifles, one in 243 and one in 45-70. Both of them were surprisingly accurate for the low prices they bring.

I have a Handi Rifle in 243. It is extremely accurate. The only problem I can see with them is they are front end heavy. The weight is not distributed as well as I'd like but for $175.00 NIB I won't complain. As far as barrel adds are concerned, I think they want you to send the lower so they can insure propper fit. My Brother has one in 280 cal. it is accurate as well.

When Clinton left office they gave him a 21 gun salute. Its a damn shame they all missed....

I love them, only thing I realy complain about is the trigger pull. For a $200 they shoot just as good as a $500 bolter.

Sundowner - Great little rifle for the money. Extra barrels must be fitted by the factory. If the trigger is over 4 or 5 lbs., the factory will do a trigger job for free. Check out this website http://www.hr1871.com/ , all the details are there. From what I have heard, the factory has to fit the extra barrels because the manufacturing tolerances are not close enough to make them universally interchangeable, thereby keeping the cost down.

BTW, if you can stand to shop at WalMart, they usually have the best deal on a new Handi-Rifle. They can order any of the NEF rifles.
