I asked the same set of questions here on this board, and then tried on another site devoted to the particular type of rifle I was enquiring about-

Does anyone have any thoughts on how this was handled?

Yes, I agree, some of them are dumb questions, but I don't have the answers, so I'll go at the problem in baby steps. I need some answers about the rifle "as is" before I proceed.

You handled yourself like a true gentleman...As for the others, well most of them anyways, all I can say is the phrase "intelligence of a flea" comes to mind...I have never understood why grown, intelligent? adults will resort to name calling. It really doesnt get the point across they are trying to make, nor does it make them look superior in intellect...in fact, it tends to make them out as lacking in intellect as well as manners..
I am very happy that I was able to get answers to all my questions on this forum when I was first introduced to the sport of shooting, and was not labled stupid for asking what I thought were stupid questions.. Obviously the people in this forum have the manners, (for the most part anyways) intellect, and common human decency to take all questions as serious and show respect for the people who only want to find out everything they can...
There are no stupid questions...

Ummm, sort of? What I mean to say is that wanted to know if I could perhaps ADD value to the rifle by doing certian things, and what were those certian things. I didn't realize that collectors were so stiff that it would provoke that sort of response. Like I stated, which was miised, I was exploring my options.
When I checked the site this morning, it seems that there has been a change of heart. The primary agitator has reconciled with me and we now see eye to eye. I just hope that these folks are a little more objective with newcomers in the future, or the life of that forum will be short lived.

When Clinton left office they gave him a 21 gun salute. Its a damn shame they all missed....
One note of caution, though I do not think this is what you were doing: In my business and this is probably true of Saxon as well, there is an activity known as "fishing the experts." You ask two different "experts" the same question, get somewhat different answers based on different experience and background. Instead of concluding that there is more than one way to get it done, you conclude that both experts are quacks and do whatever you want.
Clearly you will likely get very different responses on this board and a milsurp board and probably you should have expected that. Any any event, you handled your self quite well. If they fling dirt it reveals more about them than about the quality of your questions. Better you ask uninformed questions to get informed, than to proceed without any information.

In any case, Mosin-Nagants have been among the most inexpensive of surplus guns, down there with a lot of the Carcanos and Mausers, in the $50 or less range. That's fine, nothing wrong with that at all, but I have a feeling that you found a nest of people who are touchy about Mosins because, well, they can't afford anything more, so "my gun is the best gun in the world." In other words, as was said above, egos getting bruised.
What you see as a nice project gun, they have convinced themselves is a pristine classic antique, and have a lot, including their pride and thin wallets, riding on believing in the Mosin-Nagant. I understand that pitfall, but have always tried to avoid it myself.
Don't worry about it. Pride (and ego) go-eth before a fall. Don't go-eth there. Best advice has already been given -- it's your gun. Do what you want with it. If you want a pristine original too, buy another one. They're bargain priced.

No, you have part of it right- I prefer to ask several experts what views they have on a subject are, add no "color" of my own, and then determine what is the best logic based solution, or the most effective solution. Only after I hear what they have to say do I factor in my own opinion and choose my course of action.
In this situation, I really have very, very little experiance with surplus WWII and prior weapons, and figured that a collector would best be able to shed some light on the subject. I also figured I could get some basic "do's and don't's", I expected to get some different answers, but did not figure on being antagonized in that manner. At any rate as I stated earlier, we've made nice and are continuing our exchange.......I'll keep you posted.

A 65$ rifle is perfect for experimentation. I think you should post some pics overthere of yourself grinding away.
