Plane diverted to Detroit because federal officer had gun
Romulus, Michigan-AP -- A Detroit Airport spokesman is saying "Oops."
A Chicago-bound American Airlines flight made an emergency landing in Detroit -- after crew members learned a federal employee aboard hadn't warned airline officials that he was armed.
The U-S postal inspector had identified himself at a security checkpoint before getting on the plane in Newburgh, New York -- but failed to submit the proper paperwork.
After learning of the man's presence, the airline verified his identity and notified the flight crew, which landed the plane.
The inspector was questioned and released.
According to Detroit Airport spokesman Michael Conway, "Everybody said, `Oops.'"

CLEVELAND -- A passenger at Hopkins International Airport was stopped by security Monday when a screening machine detected a gun in his carry-on bag.
The man was pulled aside and his bag was searched. Security found an unloaded handgun and some ammunition.
The man claimed he did not realize the gun was in his bag. He thought he packed it with his other luggage.

Assault rifles seized in raid on Zak's, which may lack the proper permits.

MADERA -- State authorities are continuing to investigate a Madera gun dealer after raiding the business Friday and seizing 28 American- and foreign-made assault rifles.
Zak's -- which also offers jewelry and cell phones -- opened Monday on West Howard Road.
But business owner Issa "Zak" Zacharia would not comment about the raid by five Madera police officers and an agent with the state Department of Justice firearms division.
Authorities claim Zak's does not have a permit to sell assault weapons, said state attorney general spokeswoman Hallye Jordan in Sacramento. "They're illegal," she said of the rifles, "because they need to be registered."
Zacharia has not been arrested, and no charges are being sought, Jordan said.
"This is simply an investigation into allegations that he had been selling assault weapons without a permit," Jordan said.
Madera police Sgt. Ken Alley said that some of the seized weapons are AR-15 rifles, American-made civilian versions of the M-16 military weapon. Anyone owning the high-powered rifles must have a permit, following a law that took effect in 1999.
In Fresno at Gilman-Mayfield firearms, Bill Mayfield said that law for assault rifles is "very complicated."
"There's a lot of gray areas [with assault rifles]," added Mayfield, who estimated the AR-15 rifles cost about $800 each. "In some cases, you can't get an agreement between three people whether the gun is covered [by the law] or not."
Zacharia, an immigrant from Lebanon, has been in Madera for about 20 years and opened Zak's in the mid-1980s.
Zacharia has been active in the community and local politics.
Zacharia was an unsuccessful candidate in 1992 and 1994 for Madera City Council.
In 1999, he tried for a seat on the Madera Unified School District board.
He is a past president of the Madera Kiwanis Club, served on the board of the Madera Community Hospital Foundation and on the city Civil Service Commission.

The gun was brought into England from the US
A vicar has been jailed for four months after keeping a loaded gun hidden in a grandfather clock at his vicarage in Greater Manchester.
On Tuesday Salford Magistrates' court heard how the Reverend Michael Daggett, 54, kept the gun for protection.
Daggett, a US citizen, came to the UK in 1984, before becoming vicar at The Church of the Holy Rood, Swinton, in 1990.
He pleaded guilty to possessing a prohibited firearm and possession of ammunition.
The vicar kept a loaded Derringer
The court heard how police visited the vicarage in Moorside Road, Salford, in February, while investigating another matter.
Howard Shaw, prosecuting, said they found four boxes of .22 bullets in a downstairs cabinet. Another box of bullets was found in a bedside cabinet.
Daggett later told the officer the German-made double barrelled Frontier Derringer was for his protection.
It was revealed in court he had once caught a burglar inside the vicarage.
'Different culture'
Mark Benson, defending, said the gun was a family heirloom that had been given to Daggett by a friend of his father's when he was a child.
Mr Benson said: "He would not have needed a licence to hold such a gun in the United States, there's a different culture there.
"There was a genuine belief on his behalf that a weapon of that calibre was not prohibited."
Mr Benson said Daggett had loaded the gun "out of curiosity" and was intending to use it at a shooting range but had never got round to it.
'Wrong hands'
But Judge John Finestein said: "I reject the suggestion that is being made that you do not know about the gun laws in this country.
"You were in possession of an extremely dangerous weapon for your protection in your bedroom.
"In these situations guns have been used where burglaries have happened and the gun could get into the wrong hands."
Daggett intends to appeal against the sentence, but he was told he would serve at least two months of it before being released. http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/uk/england/newsid_2065000/2065267.stm

BERLIN (AP) -- Investigators said an expelled student acted alone in the Erfurt school shooting two months ago in which 17 people, including the student were killed.
There had been speculation in the German media that Robert Steinhaeuser, 19, had an accomplice in the attack during which he killed 13 teachers, two students, a police officer and himself.
Thuringia state Interior Minister Christian Koeckert said investigators talked to 517 people, including 33 teachers and 256 students, before concluding that the recently expelled Steinhaeuser committed the crimes alone.
Two witnesses said Steinhaeuser told them during the shooting rampage that the expulsion had driven him to kill.
The investigation also confirmed the story of history teacher Rainer Heise, who confronted Steinhaeuser and locked him in a room to end the shooting, Koeckert said.
None of the victims would have survived even if they had been given immediate medical attention, according to the forensic pathologist's report.
A shotgun carried by Steinhaeuser, which was not used in the killings, was found to have a jammed cartridge.
The investigation confirmed that both weapons were legally obtained by Steinhaeuser, Koeckert said. Since the shooting, the German parliament passed legislation raising the age for legally owning a firearm for target shooting from 18 to 21.

The airplane was correct in landing the plane, but was incorrect in how they handled the situation when on the ground. They should have had that Federali handcuffed, interrogated, and thrown in jail. We hear about what an ENORMOUS responsibility it is to be armed on planes, and how only government folks are qualified to be armed on a plane. And how pilots cant handle the responsibility of being armed. If it such a responsibility, and only select government personel can arm themselves, then they should be expected to follow proper protocol, and notify authorites in the way prescribed that they are on the plane armed.
Any negligence in their responsibilities should be answered with an arrest for negligence, and they should be prosecuted for their negligence.
If we are supposed to assume that only government can handle these enormous responsibilities, then if these responsibilities are not met, we should assume that they are intentionally not meeting their responsibilities, because they might be a deranged federal employee who might want to cause harm with that gun. After all, if they are so much more qualified, and are the only ones who can handle the responsibility, it stands to reason that they would not UNintentionally make such a mistake, therefore, they must have bad intentions with that gun they are carrying.
"The powers delegated by the proposed constitution to the federal governmentare few and defined, and will be exercised principally on external objects, as war, peace negotiation, and foreign commerce"
