Alamance man, 82, gets nearly 4 years for illegal gun sales

MEBANE -- The fourth man convicted of illegally selling firearms at a Mebane flea market was sentenced in federal court Wednesday.

George Greeson, 82, of Alamance County, received 46 months in prison and three years of supervised probation upon his release for dealing in firearms without a license, said Jim Mercer, the agent in charge of the Raleigh office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

Greeson and four others, including a former N.C. Highway Patrol sergeant, had been selling guns at the Buckhorn Flea Market in Orange County over the course of several years.

The men failed to record their transactions, making the number of weapons sold difficult to track, but Mercer estimated at least 1,000 had been sold to anyone with the money, including convicted felons.

Those weapons caught the attention of ATF agents and Durham police officers conducting undercover buys in Durham, prompting an investigation into the weapons' origin, Mercer said.

He said the group was responsible for the largest flow of illegal guns into Durham.

Retired N.C. Highway Patrol 1st Sgt. Billy Rae McCleod received 20 months in prison, a $10,000 fine and a term of supervised probation upon his release during sentencing June 13 for his role in the operation.

Norman Lewis Hayes, 56, of Siler City and Phillip Ray Freeze, 77, of Burlington were sentenced June 20 to 37 months in prison and three years' probation.

A defense attorney for Greeson had filed a motion that could have changed the sentencing range for him, Hayes and Freeze, but a judge struck down that motion Wednesday, Mercer said.

A fifth man in the case, George Thomas Fail, 49, of Snow Camp will be sentenced at 9:30 a.m. July 18 in U.S. District Court in Winston-Salem.

These guys are about 20 miles from my home. Almost bought a beretta there once.

Respect those who protect us now just as you would those who died for us in the past.

Hmmmm. Wonder why the ex-cop got less time than the rest of them? Would this be one of the retired police officers who should be given a nation-wide concealed carry permit?
