i noticed there were only about 50,000 total votes cast. how many poeple live or lived in NO ?

There were somewhere upwards of 113,500 votes cast out of over 298,000 registered. Only 25,000 of the votes cast were absentee.

Nagin won with 52% to Landrieu's 48%, making this the closest NOLA mayoral election in modern history.

90% of NO is a trash heap. They certainly elected the right guy.

That guy is utterly inept, and he spent the first 5 days of the storm cowering on the 23rd floor of the New Orleans Hilton, in a state of panic, according to historian Douglas Brinkley, who wrote a book on Katrina.
I suspect that racism played a big role in this election. I bet the good populace of New Orleans would have elected Jack the Ripper for Mayor, as long as he was black.
    OJ Simpson for Mayor?

I predict NO will be totaly destroyed this year. Those levees will not take a direct hit and they are going to get at least 1 this year.
That city should never have been built if it depends upon levees anyway. I say let it become swamp like it was for centuries before stupid people settled the area

LMAO. What's the problem? A small city of idiots re-elected their primary idiot, no big deal.

I still can't believe the majority of American idiots re-elected Bush either.

NOLA, in it's origional form, didn't need levees. That's why almost all of the "old" city never even flodded.Smells like a backed-up toilet 365 days a year anyhow, another good "flushing" is what that city needs anyhow.

The problem is most of that city was never ment to be above water! Stupid people built levees and draind the water out! If god/mother nature wanted it to be above the water it would have been centuries ago! If the people of NO were smart they would let the city DIE and go where people were ment to live!

What we are talking about is the fact that there seems to be a majority of morons in New Orleans. I cannot believe they voted Nagin back in office. The guy is a total joke and completely crumbled under pressure with the entire Katrina issue.

Well apparently most of ya'll aren't from Louisiana, or live near there. Ever kick a fire ant bed around? What happens? They spread. Same thing that happened when Katrina hit. I'm from Louisiana. I live 3 and a half hours from NO. Alot of the "people" that got displaced from the hurricane are now in my hometown. I refuse to go anywhere after dark without my .357 or shotgun. Call me a redneck if you want. You try living next to the scum I have to, and tell me what you'd do. Next time Louisiana gets hit, we'll ship some of the filth your way, how's that sound? What I'm trying to say, is that the hurricane didn't flush New Orleans, it just spread the filth around. Now we got little filth beds growing everywhere. Look at Houston, TX. There's wayyyyyyy more gang violence since Katrina. Maybe the mayor had a good idea by not evacuating the people out of New Orleans...

I completely understand where you are coming from...just keep in mind that these lowlifes were shipped all over the country. We have quite a few of them up here in the DC metro area now...none of us like it.

    Good Lord, where to begin.
The City of New Orleans was one of the first regions settled along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. It's location was chosen, by the French, as the first place high enough along the Mississippi River from the Delta.
It has been a major exporting location for much of the products produced along the Mississippi Valley.
The federal government built the levees and encouraged the growth. They are the responsibility of the Federal Government.
It will be rebuilt, like it or not.
The entire coast of America is vulnerable in one way or another.

The election process in Louisiana is not typical to the rest of the country. Anyone that wants to run for office can pay a fee and get their name on the ballot. There are no primaries, save the first election, which is open to many candidates. Much like California.
The top two are chosen if neither receives more than 50% of the votes and have a runoff.
At some point in time the evacuees, I hope, will either have to become citizens of other locales or they will return to New Orleans.
If New Orleans is forced to allow those who are living out of state to vote and not be here, it is doomed.
Neither of the top two where very good options.
Mayor Nagin may not have performed well or he may have even been pathetic, but I doubt his opponent would have done better.

If the lowlifes, which I 100% percent agree there are many, are causing problems, take care of them. Put them in jail.
I have seen the trash of New Orleans up close and personal. I have worked throughout the City and surrounding areas.
I was born in New Orleans and my family goes back to the late 1700's early 1800's in this area.
What you are all seeing and being disgusted by is a mentality of being the City that care forgot being mixed with people that do not care. Not all New Orleanians do not care.

Nagin was the better choice of the two. The Landrieu family holds plenty of political positions in NOLA. The last thing neede was one being mayor.
Up till the storm, Nagin was doing pretty good. He was slowly cleaning up corruption, much to the disdain of the Landrieu's and good ol' boy politicians.
As far as the race card being played........Look into the Landrieu family tree and you will find the dark roots of the blonde.[8]
What is most embarassing is the lack of turnout.
As far as not rebuilding the city, where the heck is the midwest gonna export all their products out of?
Heck, why rebuild Los Angeles (earthquakes, fires, mudslides), OK City (tornadoes), or any coastal town?

Congratulations; you passed one of the tests, albeit a simple one.

Sadly, though, you failed a more difficult one--the essay. BTW, you really should improve your grammar; "If only I were..." and not the unenlightened, "If only I was...." Oh well, you are what you are.

Now, if you climb down from your tree and stand in line to evolve into a full human, you might be on your way to join the rest of the world in enlightenment.

    Do try, okay?
