Warrant out for gun show vendor in accidental shooting death

By RICK BADIE
Atlanta Journal-Constitution Staff Writer

Gwinnett County authorities today issued an arrest warrant for a Florida holster vendor who reportedly was holding the gun that accidentally discharged and killed a teenager at a Norcross gun show.

Cleveland Lewis Chaney, 57, of Obrien, Fla., is expected to surrender on the involuntary manslaughter charge as soon as possible, Gwinnett Cpl. Ray Dunlap said Thursday.

Steven Bray King, 13, died July 15, a day after a bullet struck him in his right eye. The Prattville, Ala., boy had attended the gun show with his father, Anthony Grant, 38, of Montgomery.

The investigation showed that the gun discharged as Chaney apparently placed it in the holster while showing it to Grant, Dunlap said today.

Early on in the investigation authorities said they might never know exactly what happened because they received conflicting accounts when they interviewed Chaney and Grant.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- A man who ran a booth at a suburban Atlanta gun show was charged with a misdemeanor Thursday in the death of a 13-year-old boy who was accidentally shot at the show last month.

Cleveland Lewis Chaney had put his own gun in a holster in a demonstration for Steven Bray King and his father when the weapon fired. King, of Prattville, Ala., was shot in the head and died later at a hospital.

Police spokesman Ray Dunlap said investigators have not determined who pulled the trigger. Chaney was charged with misdemeanor involuntary manslaughter because it was his gun and because the shooting happened at his booth, Dunlap said.

"It was definitely accidental," Dunlap said. "But our investigators have determined Chaney was the one responsible for the death."

Police said they expected Chaney, 57, of O'Brien, Fla., to turn himself in.

Chaney owned a concession that sold holsters and related items at an Eastman Gun Shows event in the Atlanta suburb of Norcross.

Telephone calls seeking comment from Chaney and King's father, Anthony Grant, went unanswered Thursday.

Joe Wargo, attorney for Eastman Gun Shows founder Matthew Eastman, said that although the shooting was tragic, no changes have been made in how the shows are run.

I was wondering what the outcome of this tragic error would be. Thanks for the follow-up.

The first post indicates involuntary manslaughter, then the second has misdemeanor. Surely involuntary manslaughter is not a misdemmeanor? I'm probably missing the obvious.

At last weekends gun show, LOT'S of "NO DRY FIRING" signs were on almost every table.

Did the authorities only just find out who pulled the trigger? Did this guy accidently kill somebody and keep his mouth shut for the past 5 weeks?
