Barnes, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence today (Thursday) applauded the U.S. Senate for approving an appropriations bill last night that includes a $50 million increase for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF).Barnes said the money would be used to help the agency in its fight against terrorism, by granting it the resources it needs to protect American security and safety."In these dangerous times, it is absolutely critical for the ATF to have sufficient funding," said Barnes. "As demonstrated by recent attacks, terrorists will use any weapons - explosives, firearms, and even knives - and steal the identity of innocent people to carry out their deadly schemes. With more funding for new agents, firearm tracing efforts, and other vital programs, the ATF can better prevent and investigate crimes, including terrorist plots. Of course, fighting terrorism is an enormous undertaking, and we will work with the Administration and Congress on new, specific anti-terrorism programs. "Barnes said that Congress could take additional steps to protect against terrorism."In addition to these resources for the ATF and more funding for the Department of Justice, Congress should also close gaps in our laws - such as the gun show loophole - that criminals, including, potentially, terrorists, exploit to obtain weapons. And we must ensure that federal law enforcement agencies have additional inspection authority and record-keeping capabilities to help thwart crimes and prosecute wrongdoers."The ATF budget is part of the $17.1 billion appropriations bill for fiscal year 2002 for the Treasury Department and other agencies. The Senate bill will now be reconciled with a similar House measure and sent to a House-Senate conference committee.
