Note, he only MAY lose his job, and is currently on leave, WITH PAY!!!Teacher who burned flag may lose his jobSacramento man has apologizedBy Jim Wasserman ASSOCIATED PRESS October 10, 2001 SACRAMENTO -- A teacher who burned a flag in front of his sixth-graders and referred to the nation as "United Snakes" in what he called an example of "revolutionary teaching" could lose his job.The classroom incident, which occurred a week after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, has infuriated school district officials and parents, who said yesterday that he should be fired."He shouldn't even be working in the school district if he's going to be thinking like that," said Myeshia Dunson. "That scares the kids. It's not good."Second-year teacher Kory Grant Clift, 25, described by some parents as an excellent teacher who showed poor judgment, has apologized for the Sept. 18 incident in which he partially burned an American flag in front of 30 students.Clift allegedly set fire to a corner of the flag and said, "I can't burn it all, because that's illegal." He also told his students, "Babylon is burning," according to officials at Del Paso Heights Elementary School District.Carl Mack, the district's superintendent, announced yesterday that he has come to a decision about Clift's career status that will take effect in 30 days, and that Clift can appeal to the school board.Clift's future remained shrouded yesterday as the school district and its attorneys declined further comment, citing confidentiality. The California Teachers Association provided him with an attorney who also declined comment.Clift, who is on administrative leave with pay, was also put on leave last spring for placing a child in a closet for disciplinary reasons, district officials said.Clift didn't return messages left at his home yesterday. In a statement released by a friend, he said he was sorry about the negative attention the flag-burning brought to his school district. He also said it remains his goal to teach. The U.S. Supreme Court often has ruled that flag burning is protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution. But many parents believe Clift should lose his job for making such a statement in a classroom at North Avenue Elementary School."If he really did that on purpose, then what is right needs to be done," said Jimmy Yang. The teacher is also on probation for a 1998 run-in with a Sacramento police officer. Court records show he pleaded no contest in April 1999 to a misdemeanor count of using threats and violence to deter a policeman from performing his duties.Copyright 2001 Union-Tribune Publishing Co.
I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.--Voltare

He hates the U.S., but does things that he could only get away with here. The little sniveling twit should be beaten with a flag pole and then sent to Afghanistan.I just went back and re-read the article. He said that he was "sorry for the negative attention the flag burning brought", not that he was sorry he burned the flag. It really pisses me off that there are that kind of people that disgrace this country.

I said it when this topic was originally posted and I will say it again. If one of my kids ever came home & told me that a teacher had burned our flag in his/her classroom, I would need a damn good defense lawyer.

This clown according to his friend who issued this statement, "is sorry for the negative attention" caused by his actions"; thats a long way from being sorry for being unamerican, or endangering his pupils, or teaching his decent and anti american feelings. The schools in this country are loaded with liberal anti-authority, free thinkers, that become teachers so they can teach their own perverted version or views of what America has done or hasn't done, to advance the cause of freedom. And they teach this nonsense, so they can have a following; they get away with it because the teachers boards, and university directors have wrestled the reigns of the administration of these by being loud voicestrous, and militant with the backing of the liberal Teachers Unions.Notice how they always endorse the Democratic party candidates. "...described by some parents as an excellent teacher who showed poor judgment". Poor judgement is not a mark of a good teacher. A well intentioned idiot is still an idiot.

Just another example of the fine shape our public education system has been put in by the NEA.
