Housing agency to buy back gunsJOLIET -- The Joliet Housing Authority, in cooperation with the Joliet Police Department, will give $50 to anyone from Joliet or Will County who brings a firearm to a gun buyback program Saturday at the authority's offices, 6 S. Broadway St., Joliet. The "no questions asked" program from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. is designed to remove as many unneeded guns as possible from the streets of Joliet and the county, said Mark Jakielski, the authority's director of housing management. Jakielski said money for the program, a total of $7,150, is being provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Police will check all guns collected to see if they have ever been used in a crime. Then they will be destroyed, he said.Because the program is voluntary, residents will not be required to provide identification or information on the weapon, Jakielski said. Police ask that firearms be wrapped in a towel or placed in a bag.Police also ask that people not bring in BB or pellet guns. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chicago/chi-0111030241nov03.story

Where do they get this phrase "buy back". They never owned them in the first place!Yeah, they'll be destroyed alright. UNLESS something of value shows up. Then it'll disappear into some LEO's collection.Mudge the cynic

Yeah, good idea, but they would then bust you for pocession of stolen property. A lot of those guns are stolen, trashed and then to get rid of them, without tossing them in the river, they sell them to gun buybacks. If you set up a booth, first gun you buy, they are going to run the serial # on it, and you will probably get a free ride downtown.I just have to ask this question. WHERE DOES THE HOUSING AUTHORITY GET MONEY TO BUY FIREARMS. SHOULDN'T THE TAXPAYER'S MONEY THEY GET BE SPENT GETTING THE HOMELESS OFF THE STREETS?

I always wondered if firearms thefts increased whenever they have one of these "buy-backs?"Kids break into your house, swipe your guns and take 'em straight to the "buy-back" booth.
