When me and my wife got started out back in 1989 we was so poor we had to eat "speed beef" (thats deer for you city folk), we are so used to it that is still 90% of our meat intake to this day so this "mad cow" deal don't mean much to me.

We are all familiar with diseases caused by viruses and bacteria. But this mad cow disease has gotten me worried. It is caused by a protein of all things, and everything made of "meat" contains, uses and needs protein. (us included). There is no cure for mad cow disease and at present I doubt there is even any theory on how to develop a cure that would target only the offending protein since we are made of protein. It appears to me to be as if some disease from some other planet suddenly appeared here on earth.

When guns were invented everything changed. For the first time in the history of the world a frail woman had a chance to sucessfully defend herself and home. My dream is that one of the anti-gun nuts will need a gun for defense and be unable to have one because of their own actions.

This whole thing just got me thinking about what happened when Oprah opened her mouth a few years ago, and the big scare it started. I understand there should be some concern. Should we stop at just the beef at the meat counter?

Or also look at, Beef jerky, canned soup, beef bullion, canned chili, frozen dinners or beef dishes and the list goes on. I just hope the panic does not become so wide spred that it will harm the industry needlessly.

cowdoc: I would like to take comfort in your true statement that more people die of salmonella than mad cow disease. But this mad cow disease is so much different than something like salmonella. For starters, you will know shortly if you are infected with salmonella and if you don't recover on your own, there is medical treatment that will give you a good chance of surviving. Plus, it you are careful and fully cook your chicken or eggs you WILL NOT GET SALMONELLA.

Compare this to mad cow disease. You will not know, maybe for years, that you have contracted the disease. There is no medical treatment for it, no treatment under developement, and once contracted the death rate is 100%. Plus, it won't do you a bit of good to try and avoid the disease with for example, throughly cooking your food. The prion protein that causes the disease is not destroyed by any temperture that can be reached by your kitchen over or frying pan or microwave.

I was debating this situtation with my wife today and she is always thinking positive and looking on the bright side. She said we can do nothing about mad cow disease so she was just going to continue on with life as usual. I told her that centuries ago, when a man first suggest that there might be invisible germs on our hands that were causing disease and if we washed our hands frequently we would not get sick and die as often as if we did not wash these "invisible" germs off, his wife might also have said that she could not see the threat of those invisible germs, so she wasn't going to worry about it and she would also continue with life as usual.

Bottom line was I told her I was just looking for any change in my behavior that might, just might, help me avoid mad cow disease.

tr fox Not trying to pick a fight here, but were do we draw the line about being safe and using commom sence? I mean choices we make every day can end with terminal results. Do we stop the consumption of beef beacuse of a bad apple? I can stop driving my truck beacuse I can get into a reck and die.

    Where does the panic stop?

FrancF: I truly wish I had a good ansewer for your question of where we draw the line. in regards to not driving your truck because you might have an accident, I'll bet if you heard on the news tonight that your particular model of truck has been discovered to have a defect and it can unexpectedly force you into a deadly accident, I bet you would not drive that truck much until the dealer fixed or replaced that truck. Or at the very least you would keep your family out of it. True or not? In my case I think I will encourage my family to quit eating beef (actually I quit several years ago for other reasons). I don't want to harm the ranchers but there is plenty of other stuff to eat besides beef.
