I just saw Newt Gingrich on television. His answer to the problems with public education in the United States is to pay children to do their homework.
The road to hell is paved with COMPROMISE.

    as far as paying kids

KY used to do it. KEES was the program you got money based on how you maintained your GPA in high school. the money went to your college tuition for 4 yrs.

this is my last semester in it :( i got 350 a semester.

and my class was one of the last to use the program[V]

In Chicago, they were talking about paying kids to show up in class!

My dad's answer to that would probably be " give the kid a swift kick in the *"

In my day, incomplete homework was paid just short of a backhand.[;)]

How about being a parent and making your child do that which is required of them. Too many parents are more interested in being their childs friend than mentor.

Lazy, neglectful, unattentive parents rely on the government to raise their children, and be the babysitter (along with video games, internet, an tv).

Mentor your child, love your child, and discipline your child and all will be as it should be.

If you bribe your child you will only be grooming them for a career in politics

He wasn't talking about parents bribing their children. He was talking about the school system paying the children cash from the public treasury (tax payers) to do their homework.

This would not have surprised me coming from William Jefferson "Moscow Bill" Clinton, Barrack Hussein Obama, or even Jimma Carter, but it was a bit of a shock coming from Newt Gingrich. Newt's daughter runs the pilot program and they were talking about what a success it is. Pitiful. Just pitiful.

ok, well it doesn't matter who is doing the paying it is still bribing them to do what is already expected. I pay all my children's wages already

chaosrob, I guess you're right, but it seems worse when it's official policy and the law of the land. It sort of removes the option for people who think they know how to raise their own children.

    chaosrob,,,,

You nailed it. If these kids had parents that actually cared, then their wouldn't be the problem we have now. granted, there are kids that are allways going to be the problem children. But when I went to school, my Dad sent a note with me that gave permission to paddle my butt whenever it was needed. And a note wasn't even needed then. He just wanted it understood.

My son is a special ed kid. Speech and learning problems. But he gets good grades and works hard to get them. I pay for his A's and B's. And I attend his parent teacher nights. I also contact the teachers regularly and ask how things are going. The response I get from the teachers is that I am one of the VERY few parents that even bother. My son's last report card had 1 A 3B+ and 2 C. He brought up all but one grade since the last one. He's 17. Well behaved. Well mannered and helpfull to others. I couldn't be prouder.

Makes me wonder what things would be like if other parents put in half the effort I do. And not think of it as "effort" You know ?

ridiculous...attendance does not equal performance; in fact I remember a few kids in school who would benefit the other students by staying home and not being an asinine distraction [:)]

Dakota308....KEES (Kentucky Educational Excellence Scholarship) is still around. But it does not really use "public" money to finance the awards. It uses lottery money. That is how the KY legislature got the lottery passed, by promising to use the money for scholarships. The amount of your award is based off your GPA in high school. Personally, I like it.

My wife is a teacher. Guess who's parents show up at 'parent/teacher' night? Yep, The kids with A's. The kids that are flunking, well their parents are usually at the casino.

She has been written up once, in 18 years. She told a kid "You can't possibly be that stupid". The kid wasn't smart enough to realize that she didn't call him stupid.

The memos from the office, are prime examples of illiteracy. The administrators all have at least a masters degree, and can't write a note without grammatical, and spelling errors. They obviously have never heard of spell check. If they can't be held to a standard, how can the kids?

Pay kids to do homework....with my tax dollars.....pfffft.

How about fire all the teachers who can't get their students to do their homework, read the paper during a teaching period, embezzle monies from activity funds, refuse to discipline students, can't read and write, and just can't teach.

Then we can expel EVERY kid who's parent does not show up for parent/teacher conference night.

Expel any student that refuses to do his homework.

Let these parents stay home from the casino, and babysit their own kids. That is not the purpose of a school.

    Sorry James, Rant over.

I used to get an allowance. If my grades improved or I had a good game, Dad, would give me an extra dollar or two.

Yeah, but look at the ramifications. At some point they'd expect a raise. Some would be happy with 3 days pay. Some with 4. And eventually, the pay just wouldn't seem worth the burden. [:D][;)]

Hard to believe we even have to discuss this.

    This is pretty simple:

    NO

There's no mistaking that for an "OK but". Just say "NO" to this stupid idea

If they are paid, the next thing would be union involvement with walkouts by the students and teachers for higher pay .
The picket lines would be fun to see !

Newt is a CFR 'one-worlder'. He merely approaches things from his "quasi-neoconservative" collectivist philosophy.

Nothing that a CFR 'one-worlder' does, or proposes, should be any surprise.

Newt is packaged to appeal to the "traditional conservative" segment of American society. Make no mistake, he is a globalist.

    Not my dad.

ME: "Hey, Pop, I finished my homework, where's my money?"

    HIM: "Ask your boss."

    ME: "But I don't have a job."

    HIM: "Get a job."

If anybody really thinks that Newt is a true conservative, they have not read or studied the man.
He would be just another RINO if elected President.
    God help us !
