FREE AIR????

OK, here's the deal. Yesterday I went to the service station to check the air in my tires.

It was a another cold day here in the Garden State. The air machine cost .50 cents for three minutes. Being smarter than most, I take off all four valve caps BEFORE I put in the money and the time starts.

As I put the hose on the valve and press the button to add air, the pump is running very slow. Another .50 cents....; same thing on the next wheel.

To make a long story short, it cost me $3.00 to fill my tires with air. $3.00 FOR AIR!!!!!

The station attendant told me that the cold weather makes the compressor run slow. So, I'm suppose to wait until summer the fill my tires? I got ripped off!!!

I won't even mention what it cost the fill the gas tank........[:(!]

I refuse to pay for air. There are still a few stations around that still provide that SERVICE free and I know where they are and I give them my other buisness. Glad to see it peeves someone else off besides me.

I had a slow leak in my one tire a few months back. so id fill it up every couple of days no prob just the 50 cents for air. @ times a person waited for me to get done and used the rest of my time kind of got me mad. the one guy that did it was driving an escalade

I think it depends on the state too. When I was in CA, I had to pay 50 cents for air. But in NY, ND, & TX its free everywhere you go. But, thank god for base gas stations! [:D]

Holy Farking Potatoes!! Charlie, remember when all service stations actually gave you service? Free air, water, windshields squeegee'd, oil checked and then a great big thanks for stopping by.

I picked up one of those little 12 volt jobs at a garage sale for $5.00. It's slow, but, it's paid for itself many times over.

I think I'd go get myself a portable air bottle and keep my extra air for myself. Just to p*ss the idiot off that wants a free ride.

The problem is that most businesses these days don't realize that regardless of anything else services such as this are what ultimately keeps customers coming back. A compressor and hose will cost a service station less than $200 but will last for years. Essentially it does not cost them a dime for such a simple service. Next time the guy may go to a station where the air is free and fill up with gas there. As an owner you have to ask if the 50 cents is worth the $40 gas and snacks sale you just lost.

woodsrunner had it right. I have a portable 12v air compressor. Takes about 3-4 minutes to pump up a tire. I also have a 20# gas grill bottle converted to an air tank. I refuse to pay for air.

Been there. Done that. It kills me also to pay for air. So I don't. I have a spark plug motor pump that my dad made back in the 50's. He made it for our trips to the desert. Came in handy many times. Just pull a spark plug, screw in the adapter, attach the hose to the tire and start the vehicle up....I'm still using it today. It also has a gauge in the line. This thing serves two purposes. One, I get air for the flat tire and two, I get to remember all the times with my dad when we used it....[:D][:D]

I had to use one of those pay for air machines once. It gave me just enough so that I could get home where I have a REAL air compressor. I run higher pressures then they will deliver.

Ive never heard of charging for air?Stations here leave the air hose out when their open. But put the hose inside when closed, and I thought that was bad.Used to be any garage give free air at any time, then people started cutting hoses and tearing things up so they have to put the hose inside when closed.I know one garage that has a very old set up and they leave it avaliable at all times. Its one of thos that you crank a handle and set how much air you need such as 35psi,when you start pumping a bell jings until you get how much air you ask for. When it quits jinging your all done. All they ask is that you roll the hose back up.

Actually in California its state law that if you buy gasoline they are supposed to give you the quarters out of the register for the air. You only have to pay the quarters if you DO NOT get gas.

But I don't bother I have a $20 dollar 12v cig lighter air pump (its slow 5 min a tire, if its completely deflated) that will pump as fast as those service station ones. And I don't have to go and stand in line to get the freaking quarters.

I never had the displeasure to buy air at those places.

At home I have 2 compressors in the shop 5 hp and 7 1/2 hp.

For on the road I carry a 20 cubic ft bottle (about 4" diameter and 16" long) of 2200 psi air and a pressure reducer (a scuba first stage adjusted to 100 psi).

To fill those scuba bottles I have an I.R. 5-R. 15 cubic feet per minute at 5,000 psi. (I never liked the fills at dive shops when I was diving all the time).

At bit of over kill but I have become comfortable with air tools when and where I need them. I have built some cabins for friends and I take along a few scuba tanks to run the Senco nail guns and it makes the work go faster.

All this just so's we can get to Harrisburg......[V] If'n I was in the shape I was in when I went to HS, I'd have blown them up by mouth. That reminds me, I know this girl who could, well poof, never mind [:I]

Was up to me, I'd take the damn rubber off and just drive on the rims, but Mrs njretcop would probably complain about the noise and sparks flying up from the raod, LOL.

SXS, Ya better get those eyes checked my friend. Be a cold day when I'm giving away an AR. haha.
