Thanks, paypal- for nothing

Well, paypal just did something else to tick me off. Now they aren't letting people with basic accounts recieve credit card funded payments; upgrade and pay a 2.9% fee plus $.30 or else just accept bank account/debit payments. You know, I spoke to a gun store owner about this. He does not charge a "lost value fee" on credit card orders; he says only Discover charges fees, so he does not accept discover. MC and Visa though are ok. Anyone know the dirt on this? Nuts.

A while back I came across a page or two about experiences with PayPal and how lousy their service was. I thought I'd come across it on AA or GB but can't seem to find it. It pretty much made up my mind that I'd never use them and I shy away from auctions where that's the only method of payment.

Hi, I was signed up with Paypal for My ebay sales, and buying stuff.Never could get in.Would never take My password.I tried for 2 months to get ahold of them.No answers to my emails,or phone calls for 2 months. When I did get ahold of them, they said we will just give You a new password. What word would You like for a password?I told them how about Paypalsucks. They gave it to Me.I went to their link, and typed in paypalsucks, and it worked.Went to My account and closed it out.Even got $5.00 in the mail from them. Jonk,When PayPal came out with that it kinda pissed me off too and I quit using them for a while, but I'm back now because some people live on credit cards! Here is a copy of the email I send to a "Winning Bidder":=============================================Jonk,Congratulations, you are the winning bidder of Gunbroker Item Number: XXXXXX, X(item description)X. Your total with shipping is $100.00. Please forward your mailing address and I will have it ready to ship when payment is received. You may send Postal Money Order or Certified Funds to:XXXX XXXXXXXXXXX XX XXXX XXXXXXXX,XX. XXXXXI can also accept Credit Cards through Pay Pal at this e-mail address (kimberkid@gunbroker.zzn.com), however there is an additional 3% surcharge for processing that Pay Pal charges me, which I pass on to the you! This would make your total $103.00. On the positive side it saves you a trip to the Post Office, M.O. fee and postage PLUS I can send it out the next business day! Thanks & have a great day!kimberkid=============================================I dont make any bones about it, and I charge it for ALL PayPal transactions (I don't think anyone I've sold to had an PayPal account funded through a bank account). I make it clear that PayPal is accpted for THEIR benifit, that there is a cost involved and if they want to use it THEY PAY. I have never had anyone object, and several people pay the extra $12-$15 fee on $400-$500 items. Personally any fee over $10 I would get a M.O. ... but thats just me.

Jon -Like the man said, paypalsucks, but for some people (have international customers), it, or something of that nature, is a cheaper solution than anything else (as a private party, I'm not set up to take credit cards). I don't advertize PP, but like kimber, I'll take it if the buyer pays the freight on their fees.

If you ever looked at any of my auctions, you will see the last two words in my description are, "NO PAYPAL."

I have to wonder if there's somebody working inside of PayPal involved in credit card/identiy theft. The service seemed like a neat business idea (the company is even "shopping" to take themselves public), but there's something "weird" going on there.I had used the service some to pay for auctions; I followed the procedure to raise my $1000 spending limit, but while "verifying" my account, I got a window telling me that my provided bank account was "not acceptable" and that I needed to fax a copy of my bank statement and a copy of my drivers liscense to a phone number they gave me.I WAS still connected to their secure server when I got this window, so it was coming from "inside" the company--but when I asked for clarification as to WHY they wanted this information I got ZERO response, not even an automated email response.I made numerous attempts trying to contact them--even sent an email to their personnel dept.--but not a single response. It leaves me very suspicious; I haven't used the account again and am watching the credit card account I had used with them, for any irregular activity.

All credit card companies charge a percentage of the sales back to the stores. My understanding is like it is a rental fee for them 'allowing' the store to use their services. It is crappy, but so many people do live on credit cards now.

Well, I'm still gonna use them because of convenience, but I don't have to like it.

Like competentone, I had a weird experience that made me very cautious w/ PP. I still maintain a small acct w/ them - largely for the convenience of international customers - but change the passwords frequently.

I love paypal. I let four to five hundred bucks sit there so when I want something I can pay for it instantly. I also don't mind paying a fee for receiving payments with them. Known as the cost of doing business.

I have been using PayPal for a couple years... I have my account linked, and even got their ATM Mastercard. They GIVE ME money back on purchases made with it, so if a customer buys something, and I get dinged the 3%, and turn around and buy something with the ATM card using those funds, I get 1.5% back... It helps...There hasn't been a single problem, and I do audit my accounts monthly. The problem with the Check routing number competenone might have had isn't uncommon... I did have a delay getting a second business account set-up due to differences in the routing numbers, but a call to the Bank, and a Contact with PayPal got it straightened out.I wasn't happy with the Fee's increase, but consider the additional service offerings worth the price of admission. They maintain a high level of Security, and the level of Logging, and Records have been quite good.To set myself up with the ability to take Credit Cards, it would cost much more for the Terminal, and Software... PayPal is clearly much less expensive to invest in...

Forgot to mention... I also get about 1.25% back in Interest, so that 3% gets down to about .25% in the end... Hard to be that, especially when I turn that 3% back in some cases to the buyer...

jaydee,But the thing that worried me the most when I was trying to get the account verified, was the complete lack of response (not even an automated email response--as much as I hate those). And no explanation: just "You must fax us this personal information"; which a lot of people wouldn't think twice about doing--the information they wanted could really make it easy for a crook to assume your ID.How could you contact the company if you had an emergency, really serious fraud situation? Email which they do not respond to? Their PO box--which is the only address they seem willing to provide? If the crooks know how inactive PayPal is to customers, that's a recipe for problems.
