hi, I had a friend that threatened to commit suicide and the state polie were called in. they took him to the hospial where he stayed for 2 days. He threatened to do this with a gun. He has asked me if he would be able to buy a gun in the future. I do not belive that he should have a gun but am curious if this indeed would come under the instant check system being as he was not committed. I was surprised that they just kept him two days to start with. If someone can help me with this answer, it would be appreciated. Would he indeed come under the system and be denied the right to purchase?

Without a court-ordered committment or finding of incompetency, his status does not change.

In Illinois, the land of the FOID card, a stay in a mental health facility is one of the criteria that allows the Illinois State Police to revoke or refuse to issue a FOID Card. Without a FOID card, one is unable to purchase a firearm or ammo within the State of Illinois.[This message has been edited by William81 (edited 02-07-2002).]

How long ago did this suicide threat happen?Maybe your friend is asking for help again (in asking you whether or not you think he'll be able to buy a gun)? It concerns me that you say you think he shouldn't have a gun. If you haven't already, have a good talk with him.
