HELP!!! Bullet Problems

On a recent coyote hunting adventure in the Colorado Rockies I was having problems with my bullets. A little info about the bullets first. I am shooting a 22-250 with Nosler 55 gr. ballistic tipped varmint bullets. The bullets were traveling at about 3550 fps. My problem is that when the bullet would hit the coyote it would blow up on the outside of the coyote. It would blow a hole about the size of two fists clasped together on the hide but it would not go past the ribs. It completely ruined the hides. The info that I have read about these bullets states that they are suitable for velocities over 3600 fps. I can not seem to find the problem. Currently I am shooting the legendary round of 38.0 grs. of H380 topped with a 55gr. FMJ-BT that has been lethal on bobcats and coyotes as long as you put it in their ear. But it really makes a mess when it comes to skinning the head. Any and All help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.songdog

You can slow down your present bullet or try a larger bullet. I hear that the 70 gr. bullet is designed for deer hunting, it should give you more controlled expansion and smaller pelt holes.

OR, you could think about changing bullets. The Barnes X bullet will hold together and perform well. Give it a try.

After many years of puting bullets into coyotes.I have found NOTHING to compare with factory Hornady 55gr V Max molley. If you wont to stick to your noslers,Slow them down,They will do the job. With the V max you wont get a exit wound,When I was in my twentes,Wich was long ago.I cooked up some super crow loads.Several problems arouse,NO GROUP......UnABLE TO HIT TARGET.A man tapped me on the shoulder,And told me to shoot with out looking in the scope.Surprise,surprise.Little blue puffs of smoke at about 75 yrds. The bullets were not even making it 100yrds.Back her down, and I dont think you will have a problem with SPLASH wounds. My old pet load for the 22/250 is 33gr of 3031,should push it just under 3500.Note this is a hot powder,But I have put more than 3500 rounds through the same barrel.

Thanks for all of the replies. I have thought about the V max alot. Just have not bought them yet. A friend of mine was shooting the factory loaded ammo from hornady and they were lethal. I believe that i will give them a try. Thanks again.Songdog

Don't know anything about shooting coyotes, but what sort of twist do you have to your barrel?I've read of instances of centrifugal force generated at extreme velocities--and subsequent extreme revolutions--causing bullets to literally disintegrate. The bullet could be just barely "holding together" and when it impacts the target, the additional stress causes disintegration.
