IT'S WHAT PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT THEMSELVES THAT MAKES THEM AFRAID.
Kinda like the kid asking the parent for $100 and watching the parent freak out about them not needing $100 and going into a long talk. Then the kid asks for the $20 they wanted in the first place and getting it as, "Well, that's more reasonable". If they asked for the $20 to begin with, they would not have gotten it.

And until the government begins an audit into their pricing practices they'll keep gouging us as they see fit. After all, people can b!#ch all they want, but they can either keep on paying these outrageous prices or walk.

Remember the gas shortage of the 70's. There was no shortage, as there were billions of gallons in holding tanks at that time. It was a control game to raise prices. Old gas was sold at new prices. There is no shortage now- just another game!!
The fact is, there is not enough refining capacity in this country--noboby wants a refinery in their back yard so "environmental hurdles" are thrown up to keep new refineries from being built.
The end result is not enough gasoline and the price--which is determined by free market trading--is bid up to a level where supply and demand balance.
Simple economics--and the economics of government restricting industrial development.

competentone- Yes- and the world is a disneyland. When you grow up (as I did) you will find lies and money make the deals! It's called competition and survival and massive profit to engorge ones self to insure existence in a multi-billion dollar game. Who controls who? The steel company or the oil company? What can we get away with before the feds interfere? How much will the public take? Lets base our calculations on that! Money is power, power is control!! Do we own the feds yet? What lies will explaine our disception? You like chess? Lets play a game!!!![}:)] And they(you) won't know the difference! Haw,haw,haw,haw--- gullible, can't think for yourself idiots!!!--- That's what they are doing!!!! GOT IT!
So daddo...have you been reading Marx again? Or is your experience with the business world limited to companies like Enron and Worldcom?
Yes, there are some dishonest and scheming business people, but they are the exception not the rule. (Do you really think the talk in corporate board rooms matches that of a local street gang as they prepare to "shake-down" unsuspecting victims with some fraud scheme? If you do, I'll inform you, it doesn't!)
You claim to have "grown-up" and realized that business people are effectively "just a bunch of crooks"--I don't know what your experience is, but my 20+ years associating with people in all different aspects of American business, from small to large, has left me very impressed with the integrity of business people generally.
Those (few) who do behave in the dishonest manner you suggest is the "norm," seem to end up--in my experience--largely unsuccessful. A reputation for being "a liar or a crook" doesn't get you far in the business world.
It really sounds to me like you've been watching too much of what Hollywood produces--I suspect your concept of what the business world is like, isn't from your personal experience with it, but is the result of viewing the (ridiculous) way "business" is portrayed in movies and television programming. Either that, or you've ended up working in some very poorly run companies and have determined that that is the norm.
Our president and vice are both in oil industry, as are many in congress and more than likely still have a hand in its priceing, so were not going to get much relief from them untill it comes close to election time. Then they will ask there friends in money rich oil cos. to drop it for a bit. Then as soon as the election is over prices will go up again.
The oil supplies will not last forever.
From what I have read there is probably only another 25 years or so left at the present rate of use.
I believe that the next form of fuel for motor cars etc. will by of a hydrogen fuel cell type and that would be a good place to put investment money for the future.
But as is everything to do with powering cars and trucks, the oil industry will have and most likely has now got there hands into this as well.
It was like years ago I read where an individual had made a carburator that would improve gas mileage by quite some amount, but the oil industry got wind of it and bought the guys patent out, then buried it for later use or not. I dont know if it was true or not, but it wouldnt suprise me if it wasnt.
Gas will go down, but not to its original level as it was before it went up, oil cos. wants it that way.[}:)][:(!]

There is truth to the ultra-high miliage carbs--though it is usually more about complete engine design than just the carb.
Most designs just "boil" the gasoline and "burn" (the more efficient way is to "detonate") the fuel/air in an extremely lean mix. Fuel miliage can be amazing--with minimal detriment to performance.
The fact that such lean-burn motors aren't being mass-produced has less to do with the decisions by "business people" and more to do with the decisions by "politicians" (and yes, you do have those--like Bush--who have a foot in each). The amount of taxes collected on oil--and specifically on gasoline--could be severely affected by the technology.
Lean-burn motors, especially when designed for fuel/air mix "detonation" can also be effective with gasoline substitutes. Some in the oil industry/auto industry just want to maintain the "status quo"--they are afraid of (radical) changes...
