Swapping Guns With A Manufacturer-Method To Do So?

I talked to a representative at a firearms manufacturer yesterday.

He wants to send me a new gun to replace one I sent in for repair and had damaged (vice-marks, gouged, scratched, hammer marks) by some bonehead of a repairman there.

I was surprised at the offer even though I thought it was the right thing to do.

I live in Illinois and don't know what the proceedure is for exchanging one gun for another.

I called a dealer yesterday, but anyone who knew anything will not be in until this afternoon.

The manufacturer is calling me late this morning. It can wait, but I thought I would run it by everyone here and see if anyone has had any experience with this. Are there any Illinois gun owners here who have done this...or anyone else for that matter? [8)]

    Fort_knox,

Our shop (in IL) sent one of our range guns back to Smith & Wesson to be repaired, the frame was cracked. They actually swapped out the frame at no cost to us. It was an old 5906 that must've had millions of rounds thru it. I don't see any problem with what you mention.

I'm not as versed as my boss on the issue of sending it in, but from what I have heard as non dealers, we can send guns to the manufacturer w/o going through a dealer. However if you want your gun to make it make be sure you use a shipper that has tracking & pay the extra money to insure fast delivery.

I just attended a ATF/Illinois State Police conference last night where the issue of shipping firearms came up. The head of the ATF's gun recovery program mentioned that you want tracking when shipping firearms. Priority Mail isn't tracked or investigated if it's lost, only certified mail is. He actually advised us not to use the Post Office, but instead use UPS or Fedex.

YOU CAN SHIP A FIREARM (ANY) TO THE MGF. FOR REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT, THEY CAN RETURN IT DIRECTLY TO YOU (EITHER YOUR ORIGINAL FIREARM OR A REPLACEMEN).

    Check out:

B8 & B9 seem to apply in this case.

    Fort,

I think you are covered since you are going thru the manufacturer. Just make sure they give you documentation of the previous serial number & the replacement serial number. As long as you can legally obtain firearms on the state & fedral level, I don't think this is an issue. I have some phone numbers for both the ATF & the Illinois State Police Firearms Department out in my car. I'll grab them at lunch send ya an email.

I bought a used acutec 9mm, it broke the take down latch after 5 shots.
I sent it to the factory and they sent me a new one with the old serial# free of charge, I traded it off with out fireing it

fort knox, you have been given good advice on this forum.

If it is a long gun, you want to ship it USPS or UPS; FEDEX requires that ALL firearms be shipped Next Day Air, and that will be very expensive. If it is a handgun, you can only ship it UPS or FEDEX Next Day Air; you MUST declare the contents of the package as a firearm, and most clerks require the words "firearm for repair". Nothing, including the name of the recipient, can be marked on the package indicating that it contains a firearm.

If it is a handgun, and you have a good relationship with your dealer, he may be willing to ship it for you by USPS, which will save you a lot of money.

OK, so who is the manufacturer?

Edit: Never mind, I see the "If all goes well I will certainly be a pro-active advocate regarding the GREAT customer service this company provides...even though they did screw up my rifle. Until then I will refrain from mentioning any names...see how it turns out!" comment.
