So ... Josey1, What would you do with your hypothetical $80,000?

Or did you just happen to get a $80,000 windfall ...
and looking for some good ideas?

Yeah Kimber I kinda have some money coming to me for a long standing compensation claim that has been fought over for many years but is in the settlement stage as we speak. Medical science finally caught up with the insurer and my claim was completely and inarguably proven.

After attorney fees and such the amount will be closer to $90,000 but I am withholding $10,000 for medical bills (cancer is an expensive disease even with insurance). I'm no youngster and my home is paid off, kids are done with school so I was looking into putting the bulk of the award into something long term for my children and grandkids.

I must admit though that I have thought of blowing it all and enjoying my final years(god willing) on earth a little more comfortably.

Good for you Josey. Settlements are a pain in the * to finalize, glad to see the lawyers didn't get it all. By the way, I'd settle for a Barrett 99 also, don't want to be greedy[;)]

    Congradulations!

My advise would be to enjoy yourself and spend it anyway you want because the kids will get whats left anyway! If your kids are anything like the type of person you seem to be, thats what they would want too!

If any of you children share your interest in firearms, buy some nice ones that will appreicate and plan on passing them down ... lately I've seen more appreication in firearms than the stock market [^]

    Josey,

You make it sound like it's "either/or"--either "blow it all" or "save it for children/grandchildren"--seems to me you could do a little of both.

It probably makes sense to set aside a portion as "fun money"--a little spending will get the "urge" out of your system and help you save/invest without regrets--if you decide you want to save for your heirs.

Personally though, I like to see those motorhomes with the bumper sticker "We're spending our children's inheritence!"

Let the kids/grandkids earn their own money--they'll appreciate it more that way!
