Actually, Xmas is sometimes used because X is the first letter of the Greek word for Christ. It came into use as a way of writing Christmas with fewer letters as on a sign or other print media. It was not originally intended to diminish or remove the true meaning of the day or term. ("Xn" is sometimes used in notations in Christian works to denote the term Christian, as well.) However, in the more recent times, some--in ignorance--have taken to using Xmas in order to obliterate the CHRIST from Christmas--or worse yet, simply gone to "Happy Holidays," "Season's Greetings," or some other expression to help us to forget the REASON for the season and to placate those who do not honor our Lord.

Believe it or not, Christianity (and Christ, for that matter) was not born in America. They came to be long ago in a part of the world where Greek was commonly spoken by educated people. Yes, I know, Jesus reportedly spoke primarily Aramaic but those who came after him--the disciples and especially Paul the Apostle--spoke and wrote in Greek. Many in that day were polyglots, unlike so many Americans (myself included, regretably) who can barely manage ONE language. [;)]

You know I've had it with all the "religious freaks" the world has! I'm just reading someplace in Sudan a British female teacher is in jail for letting her class name a "teddy bear" Muhammad! She's charged with inciting hatred, insulting religion, and showing contempt of religious beliefs and is now subject to 40 lashes! Well after hand writing 3 dozen CHRISTMAS card PLEASE EXCUSE me for abbreviating the word Christmas with Xmas! .IF God has a problem with that, then HE can punish me! .OR do you want to cast the first stone? .Seems to be the standard practice these days!
