I think the odds are pretty slim if I remember my H.S. Biology. It is a recessive gene that causes Albinoism. He's pretty cool though.

Crazyhorse is correct. Albinism is a recessive trait. This deer would have to mate with another carrying the trait, in which case 50% of the offspring would be albino. Mated to an animal that is not carrying the trait, offspring would carry the trait, but not appear albino.

All I can see is red x's because of a filter at work.

But, there is a difference between albino and piebald. Albino deer are pretty rare. Piebald is actually not quite as rare in many areas of the country. Piebald have brown eyes, hooves etc and actually have pigment, whereas albinos are a recessive gene trait that results in no pigment.

Either would be a trophy, but it is my understanding that they are illegal in some states to shoot.

As far as I know, it's legal to shoot them in Virginia, but nobody I know would ever shoot one. Around here if you kill a white deer you will be a jinx and have bad luck from now on. I'm not superstitious, but something just don't seem right about shooting a white deer.

What ya gonna do with him?We had a pet deer years ago,he was a trip,If you have'nt already found out, they need to be stimulated to urinate and defecate, momma does this by licking the respected areas, the forums gonna have a heyday with this but if you don't do it he will die from the build up.Momma does this and eats the "product" so predators don't know there is a baby nearby. It does'nt take much a paper towel will do,takes about 2-3 weeks before they're on they're own completely.Bottle feed him and he'll come when called, they make great pets, watch the kids when he gets about 4 months old they spar with those front hooves and they're sharp.Kept our's in the house and barn for about 2 months with supervised trips outside then he was free to come and go as he pleased,No trouble with the law then,he was free to leave anytime.Got hit on the road late in the fall the first year.that was a bummer,Oh yeah,He loved to stomp the cats and chase em' when they ran[:D]Have fun;ST

And when they hit sexual maturity male bambies begin attacking people who keep them. More zoo keepers have been killed by deer and antelope than by big cats.

Just got home and looked at the pics.

That is a rarity. Appears to be a true albino, much rarer than a piebald.

Actually, once they get about this old they are not that much trouble to raise, other than frequent bottle feedings.

Does generally will remain tame to some degree or other. Bucks however can become very dangerous. After the second year or so they become very aggresive during the rut and as has been mentioned here, have been credited with several deaths of their owners.

What (if any) kind of special permitting is needed to keep a deer for a pet? Would he count against your daily limit, like keeping native fish in Florida (gotta have valid license, catch legally, and count against daily bag limit).

Cute indeed... he would look good in the teaching zoo at work...

He's not my fawn. My wife emailed the photo's to me from her work.
A friend of her's forewarded it to her.
If i had found him, i would have imediatly notified the Wildlife office in Palm Beach County ("Grouper-Troopers")To come get his little *.
When i was a young'n, in Jersey, we had a Doe that hung-around the farm for 2 or 3 years.'67-'69 or so,and she was a true Albino.I never heard tell of anyone shootin her, but my pop tells me she was a "yearling" when she first showed-up..

Well, if you mate him, and then interbreed his children with one another (yes, that's illegal with people, but these are deer), you should get some more white ones.
