Class III/NFA question

I understand for each Class III/NFA firearm you own, you have to fill out a permit application individually. Is there any way you can convert a semi-auto to full-auto if you have a Class III/NFA license, or does it have to be full auto from the start to be legal, regardless of whether you have a permit?

Well, your a little late. To the best of my knowledge, there will be no more manufacturing of(or converting) of full auto weapons (since 1986, i think)for use or ownership by the general public. They can still be "made" for use by law enforcement personnel, but will not be owned by them. Requires certain paperwork to be filed which will include the law enforcement that it's going to. You can still purchase and own them, but they would be made before the 19 eighty something date. That is provided that they haven't been banned in your area, and you can get the required signature of the ClEO, or a Judge, or the District Attorney, or the head of the State police. Hope this helps.

Basically, the gun will have already been registered, and you will be transferring it to you, which is what the permit is for.It is a one time transfer fee (usually $200., but some of the class III weapons are only $5.00, like the AOW's) I bought a Ithaca model 37 stakeout (pistol grip shotgun with a 12" barrel) for $350, as a test to see if I could get it approved, before I went and bought a Machinegun. It was considered an AOW, which was only a $5.00 transfer fee. Still had to do all the picture taking and fingerprint cards, just didn't have to send them as much money. The machinegun I bought had a silencer on it, which was another transfer fee by itself.($400.oo because the silencer screws off, allowing me to put it on any .22 caliber gun.)

Ah, I see.....That's both very odd and a tremendous shame.Especially being that you could by an M-16 fresh from the crate for $200 American dollars in a marketplace in Mogadishu.

Bullzeye, never use common sense when thinking about the "logic" of gun laws. It'll only give you an ulcer. Next, you'll be noticing that if the Second Amendment is for the formation of militias, wouldn't machine guns be very useful for militias?

Sandman's right....May 15, 1986. Got mine prior to that for no other reason than "they" said I couldn't have one.Rarely flip the selector to "auto" in .223. It gets really expensive. It's a hoot to "rock 'n roll" with the .22 conversion though.Bullzeye.....Unless you're going to have to defend your housing developement, single handed, there are a lot of other nice guns you can buy with that money.Mudge the defender

Didnt really have any strong plans to get one, just wanted to know the particular legalities of it.It should be legal to modify a semi-auto to fire full-auto if you get a Class III permit prior to making the modification. That'd be common sense. It'd also make owning a Class III a lot more price acceptable for those seeking the company of a legitimate rock n' roller. Which is probably why the government doesnt want to legalize it.

Bullzeye.....We buy you books and buy you books and you keep chewing the covers off.You keep trying to equate logic and gun laws. You know very well, it just don't work that way. If it did, we'd be able to buy a gun in any state we choose. After all, if an NICS check determines that I'm not a criminal in WV, wouldn't it be LOGICAL to assume that NICS would say the same thing about me, no matter where I am?Hope you don't think this tirade is directed at you. Sometimes I just get off on a rant. Mudge the grump
