I sent him an e-mail about "closing the gun show loophole" that apparently didn't agree with him. Here is his form-letter reply."Thank you for getting in touch with me regarding legislation to close the gun show loophole, S. 767 and S. 890. I appreciate your taking the time to share your views with me on this important matter.I believe we must strike a balance between the rights of lawful gun owners and reasonable efforts to stop gun-related violence. Part of this effort is ensuring those who are prohibited from owning dangerous weapons (including convicted felons and the mentally ill) are not able to purchase firearms. Under current law, federally licensed firearm dealers must perform a background check on prospective purchasers to ensure they are not prohibited from owning a gun.As you may know, roughly one quarter or more of sellers of firearms at gun shows are not federally licensed firearm dealers and are not required to conduct such checks. Therefore, many of the thousands of weapons sold at gun shows may be unknowingly transfered to dangerous individuals. In light of this risk, and the minimal impact on lawful gun owners, you should know that I am a co-sponsor of S. 767, legislation to extend the background check to private firearm transfers at gun shows. While we may not fully agree on these issues, you may be sure that I will continue to consider the interests of hunters, target shooters, and people who use firearms for authorizes security purposes should either S. 767 or S. 890 come before the full Senate for debate. Please do not hesitate to contact me about other issues that are important to you. With best regards, Sincerely, Paul Sarbanes United States Senator."I live in Maryland, and if any of you other Maryland residents find it distasteful that a guy like this is our government representative, please let him know by e-mail, letter, or phone call, and at the next election.

too bad the senator doesnt tell the "whole" truth! that is that this legislation would not just cover gun shows. it covers every individual and private transaction as well. want to give your son a 22 for Christmas? must do background and registration. want to trade hunting rifles with your buddy or buy a gun from your brother-same deal- background check and registration. its just one more example of legislation designed to limit your civil liberties while doing nothing to kepp guns out of the hands of criminals. like, they are going to obey this law, too! yeah, right!
