I'm looking for a shooter grade Garand, and have found 1 or 2 prospects, what do you think about this one and the price you'd offer for it, just from the description?

This is a Springfield M1 Garand Rifle. Serial Number is xxxxxx made in May 1942. Chambered for the classic 30.06 cartridge with a July 1951 Barrel made by Springfield. The bore on this rifle is nice, IM told the barrel gauges out at 2 1/2-TE, But please do not hold me to that due to gauges, gauging out differantly. The Parkerized finish I would rate at 80%, I beleave the Finish to be Original. This is a nice Rifle, far and above the average M1 they send out of the DCM/CMP. The sights are Fully Adjustable. The Stock has a non Circle P Cartouche. Stock, Hand gaurds are a Darker Walnut redish finish and is free from cracks or chips, Some small dings here and there, This is a Military Rifle that has been rebuilt probably at least once since it was originaly made and is not 100% original. All the Parts on this rifle are made in the USA and are NOT imports. I had paper work from the DCM/CMP on this rifle but im unable to locate it yet (I lost My Book of Paper Work When found Will Mail out All the Certs on All the rifles I have Sold), As soon as i find it i will update the auction, Untill then bid as if it has no papers and check back to see any update's.

I'm not all that concerned about the CMP paper work, so dont really worry too much about that in your estimate.

Ryan, from his description there is no question - it HAS been rebuilt at least once. IF (big word - IF) the barrel is good and IF the finish is only 80% I would value it at about $400, maybe $500 if the barrel is really good. As is there is no collector value and as a shooter - value depends on how it shoots. Glad to hear that the sights are fully adjustable - but aren't they fully adjustable on ALL M1's?

    Shootist,
You know someone will come along and make me look stupid if I say all the sights are adjustable on them so I'll just say, I think so.

Teh beat up Garands from CMP cost more than you are asking. Yours is worth at least $500.00. I see them for sale in the gunshows and gunshops for $700.00 but not selling.

There are people who do not qualify to get one from CPM who will abviously pay over the CMP price to get one. Go to the CMP website and see how much they are right now and add $100.00. http://www.odcmp.com/ rifle sales are towards the bottom of the right side.

As long as there are no foreign cast parts on it and if in fact you know it to be a CMP weapon(i.e. you really trust the guy selling it0 I'd go $450-$500 for it. Some of the CMP weapons right now are a little rough if what I saw at Perry this year is any indication and I'm trying to remember if there were any rifles with a TE of 2 for less than $500. I don't think there were. I'd say anywhere between Pig's low of $400 and a high of $525 if the wood is really nice would be a good ball park. Also what is the condition of the crown of the barrel? That will really tell you if the rifle has seen too much abuse. Beach

Oh yeah I forgot. My brother just picked up a pristine(and I mean pristine) late production H&R M1 with matching numbers on everything except the op rod(that is NM marked) and beautiful wood for $950. The same rifle out of CMP right now would be around $1100. So prices on M1's might be getting a little soft. In any case you won't be too badly hurt at the price range we're talking about. Beach

Have the seller pull the operating rod all the way back until it locks, then send you a picture of the letters, symbols and numbers that are found on the barrel reinforce just in front of the receiver. This will tell you when, where and by what overhaul facility the work was done. The 1951 barrel date means that this rifle was overhauled for use in the Korean War. Very few of these rifles that I have seen have a throat that would gauge out at 2.5,but it is possible. This guy may be legit, but it would worry me that he can't find the paper work. If he can't find the papers, then it is just another MI and should be sold as such. The mismached colour on the handguards doesn't bother me as that is normal for a rehabed rifle. As Iam sure you have figured out,the May 1942 date is just a come on. The receiver may have been made in 1942,but the rifle as a whole dates from 1951 if not later. I would not be surprised to find a import stamp on the barrel. For a shooter, muzzle erosion is more important then chamber erosion. Until I had more information I would not offer more then $400-$500 tops. Best of luck, Scout
