Question about camorders

I asked this question of the clerk at the camera store.
She doesn't know diddely about camcorders.......SO
I want to get the best recording tape I can. I've heard things about "metal impregnated" something-or-other but am not clear about it.
Help me...help me...

    Magnetic tape has been iron impregnated since time immemorial, of course. You are probably referring to a specific metal manufacturer's process for hi-res used in Hi-8 MP (metal particle) or DV tapes. If you are asking if they are worth the extra money, the answer is yes, there is slightly better definition. It is not really recommended to use standard 8 tapes in Hi-8 machines, for example, if you want the benefits of Hi-8. In any case, I have a Panasonic DV camcorder, and I simply look for Premium tapes by Sony to assure uniform high quality, regardless of format, myself, and they are readily available. I think you will find the words 'metal particle' on most good videotapes by now. Sony has used the designation MP for a while. You're pretty safe as long as you're not buying the discount brands.
