    When I left AOL,and wanted to go to another provider,
    it was impossible...untill I got ahold of DELL.They couldn`t solve it untill they sent out a guy to install a new hard drive in my 4 month old computer.Seems AOL don`t like folks leavin` their cult.

    So now I`m with Outdoors Unlimited..and all seems well.

    Lord Beekeeper--It is good that you once again bless us with your presence in this noble realm of Smoking Jacket afficionados. The void was deep but a gladness fills the room now that you have filled it.

    P.S. I was down in Florida with my brother a few weeks ago and continued to curse myself for not being able to contact you. It would have been good to clink brandy snifters together and enjoy fine instruments of nicotine delivery devices together while sharing tales of peril and conquest.

    218Beekeep,

    I think you will be happy with outdoorsunlimited.net. I have been with them for approximately one year and no problems. We should all be with them. They donate $1.00 of your monthly service fee to the pro-gun group of your choice.

    I will be as tactful as possible. I would not have chosen Florida had I been given a choice. My parents sprung a gift upon my brother and me about a month ago. They offered to purchase airplane tickets and pay for car and hotel rentals for us so that we could both spend some time together. We both had leave scheduled right about at the same time so it worked out nicely. Dad visited Florida several years ago and imagined that it would be at the top of the list of places we'd like to vacation. My brother wanted to go badly since his leave opportunities are not as frequent as mine. We both accepted the gift graciously and spent five days in Kissimee and managed to see Magic Kingdom, Epcott, Busch Gardens and Medieval Times. Medieval Times was a HOOT! The food was great and the entertainment was priceless. I'll go back again and again if I have the opportunity. All in all it turned out to be an excellent break from the daily grind and the heat/humidity was quite bearable. There was an incredibly gorgeous female my age that pretty much threw herself at me while waiting in line for one of the rides at Epcott. She told me that she was "scared" and wanted to sit next to me. Unfortunately my brother does not turn 21 until September and she was in the mood to go out and party on the town with me that night. When you see your brother twice a year it just seemed like a waste of time that could be spent catching up with my best friend. Damn I wish I would have ditched him after he fell asleep at 10pm that night.

    BeeKeeper;
    Welcome home! We missed ya. I know what you mean about AOL. I've had them for 2 years now and hate them. Problem is I can't get any other ISP's to work on this machine. I plan on solving the problem in the next few months when I buy a new computer. The old 1.6gb hard drive just don't do it anymore. Besides a USB port would be real nice. Did you get that little package I sent?

    AOL is tough to get free of; they use a lot of proprietary code and they re-write files on your computer without asking permission except for the blank check they think they get from you when you sign up. I had just as much trouble un-installing McAfee VirusScan when I went to Norton. I had to manually uninstall over 120 more files AFTER I ran their uninstall software to get rid of all of it that was still messing with Windows.

    I was having a miserable time with MSN because I'm a serious user and I bought this very hi-tech Sony DV workstation, and it came with MSN. Well, I made the mistake of upgrading MSN's software, and suddenly I'm on this "clone" of AOL with HTTP e-mail and a browser that can't do anything and has to have MSN as its startup page, etc. etc. etc. etc. I was pissed. I would have to close MSN Explorer each time, and open IE where all the features are. And I would have to wait for my HTTP mail to download and convert to my Outlook Explorer before I could work with it. Then I got some auction assistance software that would do mail for me -- and it needed pop3 e-mail, not HTTP -- screwed again.

    Then my computer crashed -- normally, a very bad thing -- when I did my recovery from Sony's disks I found that originally I had had something called MSN Internet Access, which is not (believe it or not) at all the same as MSN Explorer. With the older (and more desirable) MSN Internet Access, you get a straightforward ISP, which uses Internet Explorer or even Netscape, doesn't require any particular startup page, and the e-mail is a real pop3 account so you can use Outlook Express or Outlook without any file conversions -- and it downloads your e-mail almost instantaneously. Guess what? I DIDN'T "downgrade" to MSN Explorer this time around, and now I have a decent ISP, called MSN Internet Access. But MSN won't let you migrate to MSN Internet Access from MSN Explorer unless you originally had it and upgraded. So I got lucky. I had had it and didn't appreciate it before I shoved in the latest "MSN upgrade" and ruined everything. Luckily, I got to undo my major mistake.

    Long story. Maybe you don't care. But it made my week. Since you just got away from AOL, you may appreciate knowing you're not the Lone Ranger when it comes to software companies that want to "own" your computing environment and make decisions for you that they have no business making. "Compatability" is assumed to be a quality virtue by the consumer, but it is sometimes the enemy of the proprietary software mogul. And they greedily dispense with compatibility in favor of "branding" your computer with their evil stamp. Those are the kind of software companies I stay away from. You are right to compare it to a virus. It's sometimes even more hostile an assault on your computing work environment.

    Good to hear from the Great Lord Beekeep again!
    I just got out of the AOL syndrom about 5 months ago, yep it sucked for about 3 weeks till I figured it all out. Still not certain I got all the "bugs" out but this new DSL is great! They sent me totally new software to get up and running again.
