My folks both grew up where the Florida Everglades meets the Gulf of Mexico,as their folks did ,and as I did. They were married when daddy was 23,and mama was 13,or "goin` on 14" as she still says. They would go off in the boat on gator hunts, comercial fishing trips and such things that my dad did for a living. For these trips,my dad would have to be responsible to buy the things they would need..suger,coffee,salt,pepper,flour,shortnig,a few canned goods. What would mama buy? a little bag of penny candies.

How did they get a marriage license being that young, I thought there was a minimum age of 16?.... Must vary state to state.

Re: Marriage licenses. In Texas, anyone who is not married already can get a marriage license at 18.You can get one as early as 14 if a parent signs a consent form. As soon as the license is executed, the minor then loses most of the disabilities of minority. It is also legal in Texas to marry a first cousin, but not done much.

218, The way you always talk about your dad makes me think he was a really cool guy. I wish I could have known him. I bet he forgot more about hunting & fishing than most of us will ever know!

He was born in 1917,never answered to anybody that I ever heard of.He`d take off in his little boat, hunting away from home for days and nights alone in the everglades since he was a kid.Even in the army at 27 he didn`t give a crap, they inspected his rifle, which didn`t pass, grabbed one from another guy, told him to qualify ,he qualified marxsman with it.Then they got wind of his knowledge of boats, put him to use that way, transporting soldiers and ammo, was involved in 2 major battles ,crossing of the Rhine and Elbe rivers .I think that is somehow related to how he was awarded 2 bronze stars, the ones we never knew about til my uncle was doing research for a book that he wrote, which made him(my uncle)well known.shane,I realy should find out more about my dads military records,I don`t know much about the subject. And am kind of in awe of some of the guys on this board who are or have been in the sirvice of our country.shane, also,my dad would have thought you were cool too, even tho he would not have said it exactly that way.

218bk, Strange thing I think we have a few thing in common olde buddy. My dad was born 1916,poor farmer, hunted, trapped, fished. Creek whent right the farm. I remeber stories of siens, colony traps, covey shot's,shooting turkeys over redbone hounds etc. I guess some of those times were rough. What is odder is me being 42 and a couple of alittle pencil necks in the gun safe (218Bees).

218, I wish I knew more about my dad. I guess I could find out, He is still alive somewhere. I do hear from him every now & then but he is always drunk. I think that is the only way he can get the nerve up to call me. Although I do talk to him sometimes I really do not know him. I nevre met his dad either or his mother. She died before I was born. Come to think of it I never met my mothers dad either. He also died before I was born. I guess that is why I spend all the time I can with my boys. I want to be remembered. Even if they grow up to think I'm a nut they will at least know that I was there for them and I know that means alot. It would have for me. Well enough sad stories from me! I think it would be great for you and your children to know all about your dads military history. By all means find out!!

Shane, well, in a way you're creating your own legacy for your children (if any) and/or your friend's children. Unfortunately, (and i hope i'm wrong , but . . .) you will probably forget more about hunting and fishing than they will ever know, too. It seems we never quite realize what knowledge we let slip by us until it is too late. My grandfather was the great scatologist. I swear that old bastid could tell dove crap from crow and quail from grouse! Up until the day he died, he could outfish, outshoot, and outhunt all of his kids, grandkids, and all other kin. Without effort. He was also a carpenter, metal fabricator, and farmer. If I only had an ounce of his knowledge... I guess it is just the things that make generations, and "the times, they are a-changing". He couldn't have ever figured his way around this keyboard.
