Kate Smith singing "God Bless America" on her weekly radio show in the 1940's? What a wonderful voice! Even today I can still hear her in my memory. I was just a kid and barely knew that a war was being fought, but the sound of her voice raised goose bumps on me and today her memory does the same.
So many guns to buy. So little money.

The radio show was a little before my time, but I do remember hearing her on some TV specials. Great voice....she was an original.

Sadly all we have now is Barbra Striesand and her nasel intonations. Could really use Kate Smith belting them out. Beach

As another old guy, each time I hear someone else sing the song, I think to myself, that is not as good as Kate Smith. She had a television show that she always ended with that song. To my mind, the way Kate sang it is the way it is supposed to sound. Anything else is disappointing to me. I think she did USO shows in WWII and that was a feature of them. I think you can buy Kate's recordings, and I would guess that one would be available.

It's hard to appreciate her singing without understanding the spirit of the times. We were newly at war, boys out of high school were getting drafted wholesale and the USA was suffering a series of terrible defeats in the Pacific. Kate Smiths' spirited singing perked up homefront morale.

Me and a couple of guys were whatching the game on tv,at the hotel we were staying at for the gunshow. Some young chick was singin` it,during the stretch, when the older guy says "you guys remember Kate Smith used to sing that?"and he wouldn`t shut up about it.That`s pretty funny that you would bring it up.I`ll have to tell him that he`s not the only one who was thinkin` about her. .218.218
