cutting s barrel?

Has anyone ever cut a barrel down on a 500 Mossberg to say 20 or 21"s strictly for deer use say if the gun was only for deer hunting and I used another for pheasant? I wanted to have the modified barrel cut down and a bead put on the front for a quick handling slug gun. My buddy is a gunsmith and he will do it for free. I do not care about losing my choke. I want this gun for deer exclusively and really hate changing barrels cause I have heard the sights change every time the barrel is reinstalled. plus I have gotten used to aiming with a single bead. But I have read where cutting barrels back for slugs may shoot poorly. If the gun shoots decent now wouldn't point of aim be similar with it cut back? I do not mind altering my barrel but do not want to "waste" it if it is useless. jimbo

why go thru all of that when you can buy a decent rifeled or smooth bore slug barrel for cheap?

I agree. If I had different uses for the same gun, and it required different barrels, I would have an excuse for either 2 barrels, or two guns. I also dislike modifying a firearm from it's original state. But then, I never modified a car either. Always buy it the way I want it, and leave it original. If it isn't the way I want it, I try to find one that is. Have heard it too many time... "why in the world did somebody cut the barrel off of a perfectly good gun" I always wanted a saw-off shotgun, so I bought a stakeout.(Ithaca model 37) It has a 12 or 13" barrel. Can't get much shorter than that on a pump. And it's legal, plus original. Decide what you want...somebody made it. Find it. You'll be much happier. And think of the interesting people you'll meet during your search, and the things you'll learn.

Cutting a standard 28" barrel back to 20" will 'open' the bore too soon for any sort of reasonable accuracy with slugs. The slug will 'rattle' out the tube with almost no stabilization as it leaves the muzzle.Suggest you have a rifled choke tube installed after it's cut. If cut less than 18.0" the tube must be permanent to comply with ATF rules. Let a licensed g'smith do the cutting, also to comply.Look at Remington's extended rifled tube, and Brownings which is ported also.
    Happy Bullet Holes!

You might consider taking SaxonPig seriously,I buy and sell Mossberg barrels all the time, they are everywhere.Gunshops have them layin` around collecting dust.I`ve sold three this month.I got two from a dealer who asked me to sell them for him off my table for a 50/50 split..218
