Returned to Oregon from my year in country Jan '67. Over 250,000 Vietnam veterans killed by the United States. 5X number killed by the Vietnamese. Agent Orange kills.
I was getting geared up for a big trip to Canada in March of '73.
The movie Jeremiah Johnson came to the theatre in January of that year. I went and saw it with several buddies.
Right there in the lobby of the theatre we decided to go to Canada and live like a mountain man for the summer.
I was 22 years old. We were suburban guys in Atlanta, we didn't know anything about surviving in the wilderness.
We spent the next six months buying guns, learning how to ride horses, learning how to tie the diamond hitch to secure your packs to the pack horse, buying saddles, etc.
We did drive up to northern British Columbia in June and spent the summer up there in the wilderness, living like Jeremiah Johnson!
And, I did not get scalped by a Crow Indian.

Too old to live...too young to die...
