I ordered a John Deere safe made by Liberty, about 6 months ago, it came today. What fun my boy and I had draging it into the den , setting up the shelves and putting a bunch of stray guns into it, then the wife saw it !@#$%^&*She told me after i bought the 22-250 that i could not afford it, but when i explained that i put it on my John Deere credit plan and it would only be $100 a month, she was better. Drop buy your local JD dealer and check them out.

In the debate I like the green the best. I have a red tractor(Massy 285), Green Tractor(John Deere 5410) and a Blue(Ford 3600). The Ford handles the best, the Massy has the best engine(Perkins) ,but all around I like the JD the best.(Had very few problems so far.) I may have gotten off the subject, suppost to be giving feedback on safes, but I do like tractors.

Antique Dr, you're aging yourself with that Jubilee, I remember driving one of those with the selecto-matic shifter.....These tractor debates should be settled at the county & State Fairs with a good old traditional "Tractor Pull"....the kind where people lined up along the track and jumped on the sled as it went by...Now let's see....Super M?, D-21 Allis, all the JD 2 cylinders,.....anyone remember the "Cockshut" (SP?)...(Canadian version of the Oliver only red and white), Minneapolis Molines....my all time favorite, the Ford 8N. (First tractor I learned to drive)

I grew up on a farm where everything was red, except for the Farmall Regular, which was gray but still an IHC product, and an 8N Ford acquired after the war. Now the red tractors are really Cases. Things change. My small tractor now is a Massy Harris Ferguson TO35 Deluxe of about 1955 vintage. With live power, live hydraulic and six-speed transmission, it beats the heck out of an 8N Ford for most tasks, plus it has a lot more power. Still, as a Ford collector, I wish I had a late 8N and an early 9N (with aluminum hood, etc.) for the collection. I also covet an 8N with the flathead V-8 conversion and auxiliary transmission. Neat!I still have the Farmall M my dad bought new in 1942, and the last tractor he bought, a loaded Farmall 450 made in 1956. During the war, farmers apparently got some priority for machinery to help feed the nation. My dad talked about the cotton cord tires on the M being so worthless that by war's end, he had made some steel wheels for the M in order to keep going when the cotton cord tires blew out. Farmers also got all the gasoline they needed.

I am a city slicker these days, but still gotta have a tractor... Not sure if my Blue 1100 4X4 2cylinder with a whopping 13 hp actually makes it out of the "lawnmower class" or not.Still a lot better than the snapper or the craftsman.

sandman,I`m afraid were in the same boat, every time I have to change a deck spindle or somethin on my White lawn tractor I feel like a real he man.But man ,all this talk about all these different tractors and farm equipment is some of the most awesome stuff,a whole other world from where I came from!!I bought hunting land in West Virginia, and seeing them good neigbors of mine gettin up early as they do,workin in them freezin` conditions, man,I have a lot more respect for the northern workin man ,than I let on!!!And that`s only West Virginia!!!

There's nothing like a good riding lawnmower to bring out the "farmer" in each of us...now I've seen the way some people drive their mowers, be thankful they don't get behind the controls of the big ones! Beekeep, I have this mental picture of your "tractor" with a drink holder, cigar humidor and ash tray....be careful not to get your smoking jacket caught in any of the drives....P.S.Equipment today is pretty nice compared to the 40-50's vintage. I was just in a Combine the other day with over $70,000 of electronics and gadgets. Touch screen computers, crop data collecting elec's. External video cameras and cab monitor to be your "eyes" when moving it around, GPS, and sensors for everything you ever wanted to know. Oh yes....and a small refrigerator for those hot dusty days. My $.02 on gun safes-I bought a new safe from a old co. (for the life of me I don`t know why its a old co.)The co. is in Long Beach Calif.Once you get a 800lb hunk of steel in your family room its $ 400 to ship it back to Ca. and a lot to ask your friends to help you move twice more. This thing looks like 9th grade shop built it.Their are no nylon bushings for the door pins to slide on so (with greese on)when you open it it screeeeeeches. Also they advertise shear pins in door spindle. Their are no such pins.A thug with a pipe wrehch could defeat this lock.So I had to to do some modfications with a hack saw and roll pins.Their are many more things I won`t go in to. If I had it to do over I would buy a Heritage for the same $1500.Make sure any safe you buy has 10ga.steel and a true shear pin in door. Thanks,DD

DD,Damn, I said not to tell me that! OK, I'm not too concerned about the pin but the lack of hinge bushings doesn't sound good. No pun intended. Did they fix that for you also? If I could get the hinge pins out, I could install bushings and make custom reduced dia. pins. Was there anything else? I'm almost afraid to ask!Jeff

Jeff,1st of all they didn`t fix anything. The door hinge pins are fine. The problem is in the chrome pins that slide out when you turn lock spindle, they ride on steel. The "Bank like spindle just threads onto a .75in threaded stud on front door.It has a little lock screw with hex head. The handle is constantly slipping.I had the LaGuard digital lock installed,a must with my aging eyes and as much as i`m in mine. Also all good safes have quality safe carpet, mine has thick, stiff household c arpet and thick, precious space robbing .75in chipbord instead of thin dividers.Want more?I got the 60-26-30 12 gun left side and 4 shelves right. All the guns hit each other.I remodeled mine for 16 guns on each side and threw away all interior panels.Have a look at the many choices on a good safe, and the overall Quality.Still, all these minor problems are nothing compared to the fact this safe has no shear pin.I think I could take a 15in pipe wrench and get into my safe in 2 min. They may have corrected all these things. And mine now gets the job done. Most people probally notice most of this stuff, but I like to get "into" things to take a look. After you get yours and you want imfo on shear pin fix,let me know.DD

A neighbor of mine had a safe in his home and the total wieght was about 950 lbs. loaded with guns. As they returned from a week vacation, they found someone had stolen the safe- must have been quite a job. After hearing this- I bolted my safe to the concrete floor and also bolted it to the wall studs- ain't goin nowhere now!
