Firearms a health care issue.

I was recently assigned a new pain specialist doctor and had my first visit with him today. I was required to fill out a question sheet for a medical history profile which I only partially completed. Some of the questions were "Do you have firearms in the home, do you have children in the home, are the firearms loaded, do they have trigger locks, etc.?" No other question on the form went into such thorough detail except for the purpose of primary treatment. Has anyone else had this experience? I left these questions blank with a N/A through the question and answered only relevant medical questions pertaining to my treatment. As an interesting note, except for two, the doctors at this pain center are all foreign nationals.

It would seem the AMA and doctors are conserned how many people are killed or injured by guns every year which is less than the amount of people who die every year at the hands of reckless doctors. I would think their efforts would be to concentrate on their problems 1st.

I am lucky I guess, my pain specialist doctor is a life member of the NRA and has little use for those who trample on the 2nd ammendment. We have had some good conversations about guns and the control freaks out there.I can't wait until a doctor asks me to fill out one of the anti gun questionaires. That is when we will have a talk about what the AMA is doing about the number of deaths caused by doctors neglegence. Then we will move on to what is being done about automobile injuries and deaths, and why they are not calling for all cars to be built with safety cages and seat belts (4 point or 5 point) like a race car. How many times do you see a race car hit the wall at around 200 mph and the driver walks away with only minor scrapes and bruises? Next topic will be about prescribed medicines and how many people die needlessly each year, because they are prescibed these new (alledgedly) safer and better medicines, when there are others that will do as good or better, and that have been out for many years and have a good safe proven track record.Just my own personal opinion folks. Here's a copy of a letter i sent to Dr. Flaherty, which he then fowarded to Dr. Corlin, president of the AMA. No, Corlin hasn't responded.Dear Dr. Flaherty,I am writing in response to your recent article in American Medical News,v44 n33 and your invitation for our input to help shape the agenda for thecoming term. Thank you for this opportunity. As a physician currently in a GME program, I do have some suggestions as towhat should be on the agenda. However, my purpose today is to offer myopinion as to what should be OFF the agenda: gun control.I read the Inaugural Address of Dr. Corlin with dismay. In particular thefollowing lines:"Our goal is to help cure an epidemic, not to win a victory over some realor imagined political enemy. Anyonewho helps us in this fight is an ally * anyone.""Anyone" is a word that concerns me deeply. Many groups involved in today'spolitical gun control genre advocate the disarming of honest citizens.Indeed, it will not be any other way, since a criminal will not abide anylaws concerning firearms. Leaving the lawful helpless prey for criminals isNOT serving the greater health needs of the population.Keeping firearms out of the hands of children, preventing unsurpervisedaccess by children, preventing parental negligence regarding firearmsaccess, and CRIME PREVENTION, etc. are all worthy goals of any agency. Butthe systematic banning of lawful firearms ownership is a public healthdanger. Dr. Corlin conveniently ignores the evidence, from among others theFBI< that in the 33 states where carrying a weapon is legal, violent crimehas fallen! It has happened more than once this century already:"This year will go down in history. For the first time, a civilized nationhas full gun registration! Our streets will be safer, our police moreefficient, and the world will follow our lead into the future!" - AdolphHitler, addressing the Reichstag on April 15, 1935We all well know the aftermath of that political success story.I urge the AMA to attend to matters of Medical importance such as PhysicianNegligence and adverse outcomes, and epidemic diseases which we are capableand trained to eliminate.I cannot support an organization that, good intentions notwithstanding, supports our decline into tyrrany. Please contact me and let me know how the AMA agenda will reflect thisissue.Sincerely,Carl L. Just yesterday I told my doctor following hand surgery two months ago that I still had trouble holding my .45 and that the incisions were too sensitive for the recoil. He gave me some thin foam rubber to wrap around the grips and said that would help getting a grip and reduce felt recoil. Not all doctors are wired into AMA propogandra.
So many guns to buy. So little money.

badboybob, glad to hear that...not all of them are marching to Sarah Brady's little Storm Trooper Dance just yet...Other than that, guess you guys don't keep up with your NRA liturature. This is sort of old (if bad) news, and it gets worse. Seems the CDC (Center for Disease Control) decided some years back that firearm ownership should be re-defined as a disease, and as such, fell under their purview, so they are now spending millions of federal dollars (your tax dollars at work!) on gun control. Republican congress slapped them across the nose w/ rolled-up newspaper, threatened to take their $ away, but must not have slapped hard enough.
I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.--Voltare
