Another rainy day project for the Savage owners

Same gun I worked on with the synthetic ugly problem. This barrel on this particular gun came from the factory with the rear sight hole tapped off center line. I did not notice it at first, bought it used, without sights. I ordered the sights and installed them, and found out the problem. Well, solution. Took the (metal) rear sight back off, filled the existing hole for the rear sight, made it look pretty. Then, the work started. I took the rear sight which is contoured to fit the contour of the barrel, and shaved the bottom completely off of it until it was flat, no contour anymore. Lots of work with a file, and a grinder to get me started, but mostly file, to keep it perfectly straight. Took it and mounted it to the rear most scope mount hole, works perfectly. The hole in front of the sight, that isnt used, I put a Leupold Torx screw in it, and the head of it tightens right into the front of the sight when screwed all the way down to the receiver, acts as a mechanical lock, just in case. I then ground the ears off of the sight, its a typical Williams sight, you know what they look like, but now it looks like a very low profile tactical sight, for a snagless draw on a handgun. Took it all the way down so the actual blade is only about 1/8" in height, had to recut a sight notch too. Now this is one sturdy sight, I cant even knock it loose, I tried, just to make sure. I now have a rear sight that can be easily removed for scope mounting, which I'd have to do anyway with the scope I have for it, if I'd left it in its usual factory position. The beauty is that its so close to my eye now, right where it would be on a military weapon of modern make, that my accuracy with this open sight(I havent shot it yet)should be greatly improved. Its much more stable to use than where it was, the notch is very small, and there isnt much room for shooter error. Williams actually makes a sight with a peep that will mount just as I have done with mine, might be a little different, but I didnt know that until after I finished my project, oh well, this is more resistant to damage anyway. Give it a try if you like open sights as I do. Hopefully I'll get out to shoot this tomorrow and let you know how it shoots for me.

robsguns--Maybe it should rain more in your neck of the woods. Incliment wether seems to bring out your industrious side. Good luck with that Savage!

P.S. The Gary's Gun Shop experience was a blast. Now I only have enough ammo to keep one magazine loaded. Time to buy more.

    idsman,
Ya know, if it rained every day, I'd probably have all the guns that I've already refinished, refinshed again. The thing is, this Savage was such a piece of "work" that it got all the attention first. It shoots well enough, but I gotta admit, buying another one after my experience with this one, well....its not going to happen any time soon unless one heck of a situation presents itself. I'll stick with my Ruger fetish from now on.
