See!?! SEE!?! I told all of you the San Diego P.D. are a bunch of meanies!!!!Or is Moore just another crass opportunist liberal?
PETER ROWE Don't judge an author by his cover: Michael MooreMarch 19, 2002 Humor is dynamite, and few juggle emotional nitro with more skill than Michael Moore."Stupid White Men . . . and Other Sorry Excuses for the State of the Nation!" (HarperCollins, $24.95) is cut from the same working-class denim as "Roger & Me," Moore's 1989 documentary on General Motors' abandonment of Flint, Mich. The tune's the same, with greed and gutlessness taking another deserved bashing; the words have been tweaked, with "Thief in Chief" George W. Bush taking many of the hits. Speaking of hits, "Stupid" is climbing The New York Times best-seller list. When Moore champions the overworked and overlooked American, you have to cheer. But don't expect George Waller, a custodian at San Diego's Marston Middle School, to join in the applause. On March 8, Moore visited Marston for a talk that was scheduled to end at 11 p.m. At 11:15, Waller asked Moore to stop signing books, so Waller could clean the auditorium. Moore refused. "He didn't care that I had to work the next day," Waller said. "He didn't care that I had already put in a full day. I think he just wanted to sell books. He was all about the money." Multipurpose flashlightsMoore's Web site spins a different tale under the headline "Police Raid, Shut Down My Booksigning in San Diego." There's no mention of a weary janitor who, frustrated, phones his boss. What happened next? The storm troopers attacked. "The San Diego police are coming down the aisle, their large flashlights out (the auditorium lights are still on, so we all understand the implied 'other' use of these instruments). The police are telling everyone to 'VACATE THESE PREMISES IMMEDIATELY OR YOU WILL ALL BE ARRESTED!'" " . . . The cops approach the stage where I am signing the books. People are visibly frightened . . . " Curious, I called Tanja Winter of Activist San Diego, Moore's local host. Terrifying scene, eh? "The police were stern," Winter said, "but polite." But didn't she cower before those multipurpose flashlights? "The flashlights were there because it was dark outside." But The Man's lackeys were itching to crush a political progressive? "The police were not called because he was political. The police were called because we had a contract and the custodian wanted to go home." The custodian, at least, tried to fashion a compromise. "I told him we could set up tables outside. He says - this is exactly what he says - he says, 'Hey, I'm not going outside. There are people outside who want to kill me.' " Moore, of course, is a satirist. Was he kidding? "He looked serious to me," Waller said. Publicity vs. truthOne of my best friends was married to Moore's sister; they're legally separated. But I don't know Moore, except as the brilliant force behind "Roger & Me." "The real story here," Activist San Diego's Winter said, "is that people are hungry for his message: We are being lied to. This administration is out of control." That's a good point, one worth debating. Moore, though, seems more interested in publicity than truth. "The brave lady who was the owner of the independent bookstore and who was there selling my book, leaned over and whispered to me, 'I am willing to go to jail for this if you want me to.' " That "brave lady" is Carole Carden of Esmeralda Books & Coffee in Del Mar. Her impressions of Moore? "Never meet your heroes," she said.
