The 9/11 Civil LibertariansAfter eight years of purloined FBI files, White House enemies targeted by IRS audits, inconvenient witnesses dropping like flies and reporters beaten to keep them from filming the pre-dawn raid on the home of a 6-year-old Cuban refugee, suddenly the left has rediscovered the Constitution. In the wake of Sept. 11's sneak attack killing 4,000 American innocents on U.S. soil - an event completely unprecedented in the annals of peacetime history - the Bush Justice Department's roundup of 1,000-plus suspected terrorists has prompted the usual handwringers to go into overdrive. Why the overbearing approach, they complain? Why the secrecy? Is it really fair that individuals are singled out with nary a hint of any connection to the 9/11 atrocity?Probably not outside of a wartime scenario. Even so, that would be an abrupt departure from the civil liberties abuses that transpired under the Clinton administration - when there was no national security threat, no 4,000 dead incinerated in the heart of any American city.Still, somehow American journalists were persuaded that it was all right for Clinton operatives to confiscate 1,100 confidential FBI files. Trust us, we were told. It was all a bureaucratic snafu. The Clinton White House, you see, deserved the benefit of the doubt. What about all those IRS audits, suspiciously targeted against ex-Clinton girlfriends, sexual assault victims and organizations not exactly sympatico with the Clinton agenda - a pattern of political abuse so plain that even a 6-year-old couldn't miss it?Wrong again, said America's media. The fact that Gennifer Flowers, Paula Jones, Liz Ward Gracen and Juanita Broaddrick found themselves targeted by the Cinton IRS was just another incredibly bizarre coincidence. No trampling of the Constitution there, journalists concluded. But that was then, this is now.Now liberals are enraged over unidentified terrorist suspects who languish in U.S. jails in connection with the 9/11 atrocity. Maybe there's a tie-in. Maybe not.But where were these born-again civil libertarians when witnesses who most definitely could have shed some light on suspected White House criminality, like Vince Foster, Ron Brown, Kathy Ferguson and James McDougal, suddenly died under mysterious circumstances?Time to move on, we were told.Surprise, surprise. Suddenly distrust of government is back in vogue again.Witness reports with headlines like "Ashcroft Detains Jews" - as if the attorney general is some sort of Heinrich Himmler hell-bent on recreating Kristallnacht. That's an amazing scoop if a second Holocaust happens to be on its way. If not, an abject apology to Mr. Ashcroft is in order - and promptly. http://www.newsmax.com/showinsidecover.shtml?a=2001/11/24/230518
