NJRETCOP ENTERS HIS FIRST JOHN C. GARAND NATIONAL MATCH. The Central NJ Rifle and Pistol Club in Jackson, NJ held it's annual John C. Garand match today. Shooters from all over the state where on hand for the tournament, including NJRETCOP, who was firing his newly acquired M1 for the first time since he was discharged from the Army in 1960. The day got off to a bad start for NJRETCOP who was seen arguing with the range officer after he refused to score his first shot even though it was dead center according to NJRETCOP. No where in the rule book does it say that I must score a shot, said John Donald, head score keeper for the club, even a dead center one, when it is fired through the trunk lid of your car while removing your rifle in preparation for the match! NJRETCOP was assigned to target 13, relay 2. The first event was 20 rounds fired slow in the prone position. After NJRETCOP finished firing, local authorites decided to evacuate the town of Jackson, when several residents complained of errant bullets stiking their homes and cars. Airplanes departing from the Newark and Philadelphia airports were also diverted from the usual routes to prevent, as one offical stated, "a possible downing of an aircraft." The scorer in the pits on target 13 told this reporter that he was scared for his life and that his arms were so sore from waving the "maggie's drawer's" flag that he started waving a surrender flag instead. Other shooters in the match complained that their scores were down because they were distracted by the noise of the arriving ambulances. It seems several members from the first relay , who were standing about 50 feet behind the firing line in a safe area, were wounded by rounds apparently coming from NJRETCOP's position. NJRETCOP stated that he was not to blame and that they should have gone into the clubhouse, layed on the floor near the wall and prayed, as others have done in the past while he was firing. At the end of the match, NJRETCOP's rifle was confiscated and will be destroyed along with his score card which was blank, except for his name and address. Officals explained that it was necessary to destroy the card because the CMP allows participants in certified John C. Garand matches to purchase one Garand a year, at reduced prices, and all agreed that for the sake of society, it would be better if NJRETCOP did not acquire anymore of them. The target, which was miraculously unscathed by the 55 rounds fired at it by NJRETCOP, will be perserved and sent to Ripley's Believe It or Not museum according to club officals who refused to be identified.
