Are Law-Abiding People Being Fooled?California is Going Down the Tubes -- What Are We Going to Do About It?from Rabbi R. Mermelstein and the Liberty CrewOctober 17, 2001It should come as no surprise to anyone when I say that nearly all bad laws in general and anti-gun laws in particular are hatched in the Golden State. Yesterday, California gun owners had more of the same forced down their throats. Gov. Gray Davis signed into law AB35 and SB52. The bills are quite similar, one drawn up by the state assembly and the other by the state senate. Both have done what the Golden State Bill of Rights shredders have wanted for years -- licensing of handgun owners. Handshakes all around in Sacramento, the new law takes effect Jan. 1, 2003. See http://liberty-belles.org/legislation/2001cabills.htm for the whole stomach turning story.Tonight I had the pleasure of meeting with Mr. Joe Laria and Ms. Jennifer Fry, the directors of the Liberty Belles (http://liberty-belles.org/), a California offshoot of Second Amendment Sisters (http://www.sas-aim.org/).We met to discuss what gun owners could do to regain the Second Amendment in the most populous state in America. Everything anti-Second Amendment starts on the Left Coast and works its way east. The eyes of every state legislature are on Sacramento. If you want a political weather prediction you need only look to your Left. It'll blow your way -- perhaps a little, perhaps a lot -- in due season.Mr. Laria's and Ms. Fry's question to me was what I thought could, or should, be done. Fair enough. I have no shortage of opinions. They emphasized that their group wanted to present itself as mainstream and law abiding.Very nice.I then proceeded to explain that, in my opinion, the mere fact that you own a gun takes you out of the mainstream of America today. Don't lecture me about how many households in the country have guns or how many times each day a gun is used in self defense. If you are a gun owner you are out of the mainstream. Get over it.Secondly, how many laws, all of which are flagrant violations of the Second Amendment, are you willing to have crammed past your esophagus before you decide to stop being so damned law abiding? Which of the other nine amendments require a license? If I keep shoving you farther and farther backward without you holding your ground, you'll eventually back into something solid with no more room to retreat. Then what? How many elections must we suffer through, watching gun grabber after gun grabber get elected in this great bastion of socialism, and then vow to "get one of our guys in the next time!"?How many more ineffectual letters, phone calls and e-mails to our representatives and the governor need to be written, called or mouse clicked? One million? Five million? The answer is that no amount of grassroots activism is working in California, and don't feel so smug if you live elsewhere. The winds blow east."But we can't tell our members to violate the law!" How many laws are you willing to obey? And when the final law banning firearms ownership is passed, punishable by fines and imprisonment, will you obey that also?"Leaving California is chicken ****. Only 6% of California gun owners are really involved in political activism. If we leave that's the ball game." Fine! So, since your letters, phone calls, election campaigning, rallies, marches, petitions, websites and your Aunt Mildred who knows someone in the state assembly are all spitting into the wind what do you plan to do??And so my opinion was rendered. Ask the necessary questions and get your listeners to arrive at the obvious conclusions by themselves.Again, California is the pulse of the nation. And I don't say this with any pride whatsoever."Mainstream" and "law abiding".As a gun owner you are, despite all your protestations, not the former. How many laws will you gag on before you can no longer tolerate being the latter?Yours in freedom, Rabbi R. My breath and as many as I can send to hell goes before my guns. thus far as a civilian I have never been forced to point a gun in fun or anger and would just be tickled pinkto live out my days without ever having to but I fully intend iregardless of good or bad law to protect all my legally accumulatedpossesions with my life. If the lawmakers at any level try to invade my household some willnot live to brag about it. Out of fairness to all the exact same applies to outlaws.

Yep, the criminals will always have guns, and if they take ours away, who in the hell, is going to defend us? The cops take a good 20 minutes if not more, to answer a call, it could all be over by then. They are stupid, if they think, that we can accept those odds!!!!

IF California is the pulse of the nation. Then somebody please call for an ambulance, because we need to be in the intensive care unit!!!!If they ever totally outlaw guns and start confiscation.... Why yes, mister gestapo police unit type person, I do have the sales receipts from when I sold all of my guns. One by one to pay bills. Go ahead and try to prove otherwise!!

Not much to say; tried our damnest, had pre-stamped postcards for people to sign at last gun show, got a good number of them filled out & mailed, spread the news, but with the same, tired futility we Kalifornians are becoming used to, we knew that incompetent socialist * was going to sign it. Called the office myself, told them I was opposed to it, and got a "Thankyouverymuch"Click. Didn't ask my name or anything. Yeah, that vote got counted and sent on to Pink Davis. Looks like there's going to have to be a second revolution in this country, which is the last damn thing we need, but what choice are these *&#$%^@# leaving us? We are indeed being backed into a corner, and the worst part is, when we no longer have any choice and do violently rebel, the socialist scum will say, "See, we told you all gun owners are a violent bunch of monsters. See how right we were?"

Patrick O: I must be particularly dense today; what, exactly, is the distinction you draw between the home-invading "lawmakers" and "outlaws?" I for one cannot discern any.

And I keep hearing these statements by some LEO's; "I believe in the Second Amendment. I'd never enforce a law to take guys away from law abiding citizens" Yeah...right... if it's take the guns away or lose their jobs, they'll be the first ones beating your door down. Whoever it is that beats my door down better have on a damn site better body armor than they're passing out today. If it's good enough to stop what I've got, they couldn't lift it.Mudge the pi$$ed
I can't come to work today. The voices said, STAY HOME AND CLEAN THE GUNS!

IconoclastWhile I agree it is sometimes difficult to determine which is underneath the clothing,I as a rule see law enforcment as some one in uniform, with sirens on their mode of transportation, and outlaws as someone that might be more subtle in their approach to your dwelling, and masked instead of wearinga badge. sure hope this eith your identityproblem, but in case it doesn't just blast anyone breaking down your door anytime day or night,(during not after) please.

I have a friend who pointed out to me ( when I was complaining about "This week, the U.S. Senate passed S. 1438, the Department of Defense(DoD) annualauthorization bill, which contains a provision that is of grave concernto hunters and sportshooters. Section 1062 of this bill provides the Secretary of Defensewith the authority torequire "demilitarization" of any "significant military equipment" thathas ever been ownedby the DoD. This would include all firearms (such as the venerable M1,M1 Carbine, andModel 1911, as well as all Civilian Marksmanship Program rifles, etc.,") that if this kind of bill gets signed into law, then there would be a whole lot of citizens who would refuse to surrender their surpluss items, which they undoubtedly paid very good government issued money for. He suggested that the only Item that he would gladly give back would be the surpluss amunition...right out of the end of the barrel!! That makes me realize something elce...Isn't it a form of terrorism to threaten to push people into a corner to the point that they would consider such a need to defend their leagaly obtained possesions?

Patrick: What I was attempting - and failed to do - was to suggest in a wry way that the ninja clowns with their blank warrants and such who batter down the doors of law-abiding citizens on flimsy pretexts or less are themselves outlaws. Whether they are high on drug trips or power trips, whether they have cheap knives or tanks spewing flammable tear gas.

Iconoclast I got your meaning the first time round. Just funning. What you refer to is the JACK-BOOTED variety of outlaw. Can I use that termand not be thrown out of the N.R.A.?

No, you don't understand. That term was origionally USED by the NRA, speaking the truth, which offended Bush the Elder (father of Bush the Second, who currently resides upon the throne), which caused him to delete his NRA membership.
