Where Can I Get Best Money For My Son's Wreck?

Son bought a 1900 Cadillac Eldorado. Sharp car. Paid cash. Insured it for liability only. Collision insurance for a kid his age is outrageously high.

He had it about 3 weeks and pulled out in front of another vehicle and got clobbered. His fault, of course. Impact was on the left rear quarter and pretty much destroyed the rear end. So from the rear edge of the doors forward is still good. Good V8 motor and transmission. Good doors, front fenders, hood, interior.

How is the best way for him to get the most possible out of it?

    Why not try Ebay ?

I've bought and sold a lot of car parts there, and have had pretty good luck.

A recycler/junk yard will want to steal it, so your best bet is to get it to the public in some manner.

    Bring it to the range:
    pistols

    rifles
    .75\shot
    shotguns
    1.00\shot
    bows
    free
    all others----5.00\shot

When a vehicle is totaled (cost of repairs exceeds value of car) Insurance companies take these to either an auction or they may have a contract with a particular salvage yard. The car is worth something in it's present condition....most vehicles will bring 15%-to-25% of the retail value. For example a car that retails for $4000 would bring about $600 to $1000 as salvage....this may go higher or lower. A Yugo probably wouldn't bring 5% but a Corvette might go as high as 40%.

The other option is to part the car out yourself and advertise the unit whole or in pieces. Several valuable parts to take note...steering wheels with air bags, alloy wheels, a complete front end sheet metal is worth more as a unit than parting it out, doors, and radio systems have value. Engine, transmission, and tires will have some value but mileage plays a factor. I've seen cars parted out and have brought more than being sold as a complete unit.

Since the majority of collision damage occurs to the front ends of vehicles, there is always a market for good sheet metal assemblies. A front "clip" (defined as hood, fenders, headlamps, grill, radiator, bumper, AC condensor, radiator support) could bring $1000-2000 depending on year and popularity of the car.

Sorry for your son's loss, nunn, glad he's ok. Tell me is he a teen or in his early 20's? I'm 22. I've been driving for 6 years now. No accidents, no tickets, never pulled over. The idea that teens, at the hight of their reflexes, can't be good drivers is garbage. Most of my freinds are also good drivers, though few can boast a perfect record. So I believe what happened to your son, no matter what his age, was just bad luck. As for best money- I would sell the car off as parts, with the motor going as a whole unit, tranny as a unit, etc., then start selling seats, windows, etc. Buyers to do all the work in removal unless you really want to do it yourself. Then get a junkyard to remove what is left. You'll really come out ahead this way. Of course it isn't fast cash.

Small V8, 4.1 liter I think. Year model is 1990.

Mark is 18, first car, first wreck. He wants to part it out. A possibility, though where we live is not heavily traveled or populated. Buyers might have to come a ways.

Then after it is stripped, what do you do with the remainder? Sooner or later the county environmental officer will notice a junk car sitting on my place.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

Not much call for the 4.1. You might want to try advertising it in one of those bargan finder type papers though along with any good body parts. But the easyst thing to do is to call the junk yards in your area and see what thay would give you for it. Thay dont pay much but thay will remove it for you.
    Good luck TOOLS

I would part it out and put the parts on ebay. Another Idea would be to put an ad on the Hemmings Motor News website. Just list it as parting out. Let people contact you for the small parts. It may not be a collectable at this point, but, alot of those guys keep 10-15 yr old cars for everyday use. Around here there are guys who collect junk cars for the crusher. Find one of those guys for the parted out shell. I'm sure they'll take it, scrap steel price is climbing due to the presidents protecting the steel industry.

as others I see have suggested.
Take a few pics, and post it on e-bay.
Like the ole' ssaying goes there is someone out there that collects just what you have,.
I have sold a few things on e-bay motor cycle related as well as cars.
My suggestions iss to DEFINEITLY take pics and start the auction low for about 10 days.
If no one bites in 10 days, maybe you should consider looking for some sort of Caddie club on the net.
If that don't work......haul it to the local bone yard and kick you sons butt!
    Good Luck to ya!!
PS......You have to post with pics to get a descent response!!!

Actually if you can find on like it that is hit in the front it is not a big or spendy job for a bodyshop to put the two good halves together. Painting them will cost more than having it put back together like this.
