Gun Project -- Advice

I posted a couple of weeks ago that extra money I earned over the summer went into three major appliances instead of some guns I had my eye on. I decided I still wanted to mess around with a new gun, but with my budget really reduced, I had to think small.
I figured I could use a nice, compact .22 bolt action rifle for general target, indoor leagues, and maybe small varmints. I didn't want a semi-auto and I didn't want to spend a lot of money -- because I didn't have it, I spent it on the appliances. But I wanted stainless steel. So I bought a new Marlin 15YS. If you know what that is, it's really designed for kids with a very short stock. But it's supposed to be a good shooter, well built, and it's light. When I bought it, I figured it would be a fun project to put a different stock on it that was more appropriate for an adult, then I could keep the old stock and put that back on if my son wanted to use it.
Well, it's turning out to be harder to get a different stock for it than I thought. I had the idea that I might get a synthetic Dragunov stock and try to make that fit, but the manufacturer isn't very optimistic. My skills are up to things like drilling new holes, filing, sanding, refinishing, and minor modifications. But forget about a major woodworking project.
Does anyone have any recommendations? Did I make a mistake? Wouldn't be the first time!

I would have probably gone with the 10/22, money permitting.
But, you can add a stock extension to the Marlin. I don't know the
length of pull on a 15YS, but you should be able to find a nice piece
of walnut and make an extension yourself. Then when your son is ready
for the Marlin, take the extension off.
Don't send flowers when I die. Send money now, I can buy more ammo.
Incredibly accurate for the price, although their triggers leave something to be desired. Of course, that can be remedied later...
If you find a fibreglass stock you like that comes close, you can do wonders bedding the works with Brownell's acraglass stock bedding or any similar item. It can be drilled, sanded, painted to blend with the stock itself. Just one suggestion...use extreme care working around the stock bolts...if a little glass seeps into the threads, prepare for a big time headache removing them.
If you are careful and take your time, you will end up with a very unique "custom" gun.
Good luck!
