Pigs have poor eyesight but a very keen sense of smell. You will need to watch the wind. If you are hunting fields the 308 with scope is good. If you go into the woods or swamp swap out the rifle for a lever action or something to make a quick shot pigs especially sows with small piglets will charge you. Good luck

A friend from around Columbus, Texas caught this on his game cam.

The feeder is 36 inches from the ground.

    That's a big ol' porker!!

Ok all you pig hunters out there ... it is time too share some knowlege with a rookie! It has recently come too my attention that not that far from where I live is some of the best wild pig hunting calif. has too offer. Having never hunted the creature, I was wondering what would be the best gun/cartrige out there for this purpose? I have accsess to-- 30/30win, 44-40 henry , 30 carbine, and a 1903 in 30-06..... none of these guns are mine except the carbine ..wich i am not sure is sufficient. I can use the others till i purchase one for this nature...........

Please keep in mind I'm not saying go out and get this. Where I lived in Texas, I had plenty of chances to go for pigs. The rifle I used then was a Savage chambered for a .243 and I never had any problems stopping one with a properly placed shot. However, I did have to finish a few with a second shot from a 38. I'm guessing you wouldn't have any problems with the rounds you mentioned. The ones I shot at were in the 50-60 lb. range. [This message has been edited by Brth729 (edited 03-26-2002).]

.243, 25-06. 22-250,260....... any one of these will work fine. your best with a rifle accurate to 200 yds. Shoot them just below the ear and they will drop fast.

Any wild pig hunters...please tell stories/give advice. I love pork and I would love to head down to Ft. Benning for a few years and enjoy all the wild pig hunting down there. What gun do you use? What techniques do you use? I am completely oblivious to the sport of hunting wild pigs. Please share.

Went to AZ two years ago for a Javelina hunt that was fun it was the HAM hunt, handgun archery and muzzleloaderI took the trip with my custom after market ruger 45 long colt a real sweet shooter. the chase was absolutley fun and the tracking even funner shot one at 125 yards wasnt to big but the trip was unique and scenery greatI love AZ for scenery.only problem with it was the quail hunt ended the week before. bummer I have hard of hearing problems (22mag handgun as a kid)and forgot to take my hearing aids. which was a mistake since thats about the only way to tell where there at in thick brush till they break out into the open luckily I had a 15 year old with excellant hearing AND tracking skills. Found it not to far off, it ran back into thick brush, fifteen year old was crawling around on his hands and knees. It wasnt all that tasty though. and the skull makes a cool euro or head mount depending on how old and tore up they are the more battered from fighting the better the mount

Evedintly... the amount of pig hunting in my area has been declining over the past few years. but the abundance of wild pigs remains the same... Therefore I am going too partake in reducing the population.

I've always heard the term"Short range and hard hitting" when refering to Pig hunting. Wheather it's true or not it was a good excuse to buy a .444 Marlin.

I have heard a story about a guy on horseback that got knocked down with his horse by a bore who came out of nowhere and gutted the horse. The hunter had a 357 in a shoulder holster and shot the hog as it was attacking the horse. His leg was pined by the horse so he could not move. Sounded pretty exciting. I will be carrying my 44 mag when I go. I am trying to plan a trip to Monterey this year for a pig hunt with my nephew. Good luck when you go!Jim[This message has been edited by Mr. Lobo (edited 03-30-2002).]

Jastr,I shot my first and only boar with a 44 mag at about 30 yards. Right in the boiler room and he just stood there and looked at me. I was really impressed with the punishment these animals can take. The second shot put him down but not before he staggered about another 10 Yards. I think the 30 carbine is a little light for these critters. The good news is it sounds like you're going to have a lot of company so backup should be no problem. Good luck and happy hunting.

My hog hunting buddies and I had 4 in the traps yesterday morning. The intent was to take all alive--there is a hunting ranch that pays $50 each for them so they can charge city guys $500 to come hunt (now, that's markup!). But one of the hogs got its head between the trailer and trap and almost escaped--had to kill it. Luckly it was only 140 pounds so we dressed and skinned it and put it in the cooler. The other 3 were successfully loaded in the stock trailer. One is a reddish color weighing about 275--a sow that looks "piggie" (pregnant). The other two are solid black, with terrible attitudes, weighing close to 400 pounds each. Not much good for eating unless made into sausage. We eat only the little ones. They taste great...in fact, we cooked a hind quarter today. It's so brushy in these parts about the only way you can get a hog is with a trap baited with sour corn. The 4 yesterday makes 21 caught since January.By the way; we kill the hogs with a 22lr--one shot behind the eye.

Was on a service call out in the boonies on a one lane gravel road here in south Texas, when I was flagged down by a man who needed help. Seems he chased a wild hog and cornered him at a fence. He had no gun, but did have a large knife. He jumped the hog and slit it's throat, then stepped back while it bled to death. Had to help him put it in the bed of his truck -two of us could barely lift him. That man had waywoes!

Daddo-- The guy you describe ought to get a match lined up with Mike Tyson. If he cornered and jumped a hog with a knife, and came out alive, he could whip "Iron Mike" with one hand tied behind his back. He's one "tuff *."

The 30/30 will work fine.I have shot them with every thing from a .22 to a 7 mag.Get 50 lb sack of flower, And a can of syurp.Poor the syurp all over the place. Then poor the flower all over the syurp. It will look like total devastation when the hogs hit it.The hogs will smell it from a half mile away.Aim just below the ear. Then be ready to play host to 10000 fleas.Jastr if you wont to get serious about this e-mail me at rrobison@gt.rr.com Have been doing it for about 40 years.

Any of the guns you mentioned will do a good job. My suggestion is to use either a semi-auto or a lever action. Pigs are agressive, and sometimes you need to get a second shot off in a hurry.

There was a gentleman at Fort Benning (according to a close friend of mine) who was some kind of martial arts guru. Apparently he had been raised by Shaolin monks or something like that. He would hunt wild pigs by waiting up in a tree with his katana--an authentic katana probably worth more than some of our finest rifles. He would jump down from the tree and bury the blade.

Geeeeeeez.....The last time I went boar hunting was about 11 years ago. After seeing a wild boar and missing the first shot only to stir its senses, as it started charging towards me. Of course being 15 and oh so over confident, I used a borrowed bolt action (w/open sights)and only loaded one cartridge instead of the usual five. I turned around and was about to run when my buddy (who had this fascination with "bigger is better") pulls out his .50ae Desert Eagle and fires two shots. Since his firearm was about four feet away from my ear all he heard from me for the next day was cursing. Then again, he did save my hide so i'm thankful. -smooth
