"Prior to the snap...."

Once again, after sitting through a Sunday and Monday of NFL football I still don't understand how it is possible to have a false start after the snap. It must be possible, because the officials always make it clear, that it was before the snap. Can anyone explain a false start after or even during the snap?

Can't have a false start after the snap. It is hard to get the whistle blown quick enough to stop a play from running. Sometimes the offense is a fraction of a second before the snap. The referee makes that statement since the play was developing and they were tring to stop action and blowing whistles.

Most ref's start out with "Dead ball foul, false start before the snap." Sounds redundant.
