A ship with 700 tons went down, how much gold could that yield?

A vessel with a nine-person crew and 700 tons of gold ore onboard has disappeared in stormy seas off Russia's Pacific Coast.

The ship sent a distress call on Sunday as it was sailing from the coastal town of Neran to Feklistov Island in the Sea of Okhotsk.

The vessel, hired by mining company Polymetal, was carrying 700 tons of gold ore from one deposit to another where it was to be processed. Gold ore is the material from which gold is extracted and contains only a small percentage of the precious metal.

Polymetal's spokesman on Monday would not estimate the value of the cargo.

The company said it has shipped ore via that route before, and there was nothing unusual in shipping it by the sea.

It takes about 6 tons of ore to produce one ounce of gold, so thats roughly 126 ounces, or a bit over 7 pounds. Roughly $214,000 worth.
Of course this is just an average figure, the ore could produce more or less depending on its quality.

Yep, depends on the assay. The public has this vision of a ship load of pure 24k nuggets sinking. [:D] This stuff actually looks like common gravel. You can't physically see any of the gold usually. It has to be crushed and chemically processed to leach out the gold. Lots of work is needed.

It would depend on if it was "raw ore" or, if it had been broken up and washed to create "concentrate",ready for the pan.
If it was "concentrates,it could have been upto 1/3 pure gold.[:p]

we have a mine up La Plata canyon in Hespurus,Co that is pulling a little less than 27 troy ounces out of a ton of ore.So who knows what the ore is valued at that was on this vessel

27 ounces to the ton...and you told everyone where it is [:0]

Even 2.7 ounces per ton would be doing pretty good [;)]

So, what you are saying is a crew of 9 and 700 tons of gold has disappeared. Any you believe the ship sank by accident?
Look for the crew on their own island!

27 ounces per ton? I doubt that very much.
